Some major haulage this past couple of weeks:

Iron Maiden - A Matter Of Life And Death (w/bonus DVD) fucking excellent even though they've plagarised themselves on quite a few tracks (A Different World = Rainmaker, etc) The DVD is very cool.

Diamond Head - Lightning For The Nations
Diamond Head - Borrowed Time
Finally got around to getting these. Love 'em.

Vader - Litany
Vader - Reign Forever World
On a Vader kick lately. Gonna get the new one next week.

Ajattara - Tyhjyys Pasi Koskinen (ex-Amorphis singer) is the main guy in this mid-paced Black Metal group. Good stuff.

Agalloch - Of Wind Stone And Pillar Haven't had a chance to really give this a good listen, but so far it's really good. I must get everything they've done now. Mez turned me onto them with The Mantle, which I still play at least once a week. Thanks buddy!

Ancient - The Cainian Chronicle
Ancient - Svartalvheim
Ancient - Det Glemte Riket
True Norwegian Black Metal. Nuff said.

Daath - The Hinderers Heard about these guys on Andy Snaeps forum (james Murphy mixed and mastered it). Crazy tech-death with sort of industrial overtones alomst like Anata. http://www.myspace.com/daath

Vehemence - The Thoughts From Which I Hide This is their first album, totally self done right down to printing their own CD covers. Fucking excellent death metal.

Slayer - Christ Illusion Amazing. Best Slayer since Seasons.

Gorgoroth - Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam Holy shit I love this record! This is the album I crank while driving to work. Gets me pumped up for a day of...sitting in front of a computer.

Asmegin - Hin Vordende Sod & Sø Folk/Viking/Black MEtal. Fucking excellent. Go check them out now http://www.asmegin.com/index_low_res.html

That was the last Japanese KC box set I purchased when I finally came to my senses and realized I didn't need need two copies of every collectors club cd since I was buying each one as they got released and then each Jap box set when they came out. I'm insane when trying to be a completist with collecting bands. I think I finally got a grip on my problem... financially I just can't afford to keep buying doubles, triples, quadtruples of albums because they are released in other countries, there's promos, etc... However those KC collectors Club releases are awaesome and I have purchased everyone that has come out.

Hex, you will be as upset as I was when you realize only one of the 2 EOLB shirts are available Hopefully they will do another run on the out of print shirt so we can get one. Both designs are GREAT and one is just not enough for me

I don't think so sir. I laughed at you for Dream Theatre but never Gorod. I love this band...plus they have a female drummer, kind of a rarity in metal.

"Dance of the Headless Bourgeoisie" from 1998 and everything before I would recommend without any doubts. "One" from 2000 has great moments and a 15 min cover of "Bitches Brew" from M. Davis. I needed very long to love that album, live show was necessary too. The last album has still to grow and I think it will grow.

What is your youngest NoMeansNo album?

I must be getting old
Too much groind for me.

I like their Death Metal albums the most. Harmony Corruption, Fear, Emptiness, Despair and Diatribes. F.E.D kicks rear the most.

Hahaha...looks like we've both come to our senses eh Hextomeister???????

To answer Hypercube's question about NMN....The ones I got were WRONG and something else..another album right before or after that one...both INCREDIBLE in my opinion...WRONG may be one of the most intriquing albums I've ever experienced..almost a fun experience as Nothingface was for the first time...okay, not that great but somewhere close to that. That one you sent me, 'Dance of the HEadless', I never could get into for some reason. WRONG is simply a classic, no doubt about it.

Here's a great review of their latest. Bergman makes one really key comment here which I totally agree with...they're actually doing their best work now at the end of their career, which is SO rare in musicmaking (although I agree with you Harry, 'Fear Emptiness Despair' still rules):

Somehow, the phrase "on a roll" seems wholly inadequate to describe the phenomenon of NAPALM DEATH's years-old post-Earache renaissance. It's more like a fucking avalanche. For a bunch of guys getting acquainted with their late thirties and forties (that's, like, 104 in grindcore years), they've never sounded hungrier, angrier, or more dead-set on musical destruction. And "Smear Campaign" may just be the pinnacle of their lethal fury… at least until next year!

You may have heard a few things about "Smear Campaign" that worry you — Anneke van Giersbergen from THE GATHERING does vocals on one track, yes. But it's a few lines of spoken words and indistinct coos, similar to the female voice in CELTIC FROST's "Return To the Eve", nothing more. And there's talk of Barney doing "different styles of vocals", as if he's joined a damn barbershop quartet or something. There are a few lines in "Persona Non Grata" where a vocoder is used to add an extra dimension to the voice, and the title track features some SWANS-influenced, echoed-out bellows that I suppose some would call "clean vocals".

But there's nothing to get upset about here — 95% of "Smear Campaign" is fast, furious, urgent to the point of a heart attack, and utterly compelling. Not every song is a blast-fest — "Identity Crisis" and "When All Is Said and Done" are throttling midtempo raveups, akin to DISCHARGE doing "Protest and Survive" while snorting crushed-up trucker speed — but there are plenty of blast beats, and that loping punk/thrash polka tempo, and even the slowest moments on the album bristle with nervous tension. There's a raw intensity here, from the positively grimy and overdriven sound of the vocals to the insistent tempos to the blunt-force trauma of the simple and bludgeoning guitar lines. It all combines to make an album that beats you mercilessly and refuses to let up.

That's not to say it's not textured, or that there aren't catchy parts. There are even a few overt CELTIC FROST homages (old-schoolers will probably laugh out loud at a couple guitar breaks and vocal "ooh" and heyyy!" outbursts), the aforementioned SWANS creepiness, and a few bone-cracking breakdowns. But all of that comes at you like a runaway truck, with an energy level that tops even the band's own storied past, and trumps just about anything and anyone currently making extreme music today.

Grindcore, punk, death metal — throw out the categories, because at this point, NAPALM DEATH are a class unto themselves. It's hard to think of a band this influential, around for this long, that's doing the best work of their career right fucking now. Suffice it to say that "Smear Campaign" is one of the best, most important albums of 2006, and it's a must-own for anyone who claims to support the underground. The only question is — how the hell are they gonna top this?

- Keith Bergman

That's so true. Same or even more in "The Code is red...long live the code" album.

To NoMeansNo. You're right Mez, about WRONG. It is THE NoMeansNo album for me too. It came out in 1989 like NothingFace and I hope I never have to choose between these two.
