Aaaah, now we're talking!

CD is arriving today, I'll let you know my impressions on it.

There is no need for apologies, I didn't feel offended by your post! All is well on voivodfanland.

BURZUM's Filosofem arrived today on my po box. Surprisingly, I liked it a lot. Guitars are fuzzy to the extreme, and the epic overall feeling is great. It's not the best black metal I've ever listened to (Darkthrone still rule supreme), but I can recommend it to anybody interested.

Annkiz, I probably play the old rockers more than most newrer rockers. Thin Lizzy, Townshend, King Crimson, Sabbath, Deep Purple... these are the guys who wrote the book on hard rock & metal and their tunes still hold up today. They continue to influence new band. There is nothing wrong with being 'classic rock'. Most bands today will never last as long as these guys, and most of them are still releasing great albums... I wish Lynott was still around today, because they just kept getting better and better with each new Thin Lizzy album... he's greatly missed, but not forgotten.

Today I finally checked out the CD Exchange shop that's right at my bus stop, which I've been meaning to visit for about a year and never have. Selection proved to be not great, but I did find a few things.

I picked up:
Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention - I have no idea if this is any good or not. I've never heard any Zappa, nor has anyone given me any recommendations...but the Warning/Guarantee on the back was too fucking funny, so I had to get it.
Skinny Puppy - Rabies - This one was recommended to me as a pretty good starting point for SP, so I was happy to find it used. One less download for my sloooooowwwww modem.

ummm.....I got nothin' today :-(

Exodus - Tempo Of The Damned
And damn great it is. This is what GREAT METAL should sound like.
Corrosion Of Conformity - Blind
Found this one used. Now I can burn my shitty tape of this to ashes. Killer album.
Nebula - Charged
Just love this band.
Thinking Plague - In Extremis
Almost the complete opposite of Nebula. Only one word to describe this: GENIUS!

The Zappa album you found is a very good one, and somewhat of a Rock Music time capsule/ historical document. In the track 'Porn Wars', he has created a spooky atmosphere while incorporating actual samples from the infamous PMRC censorship hearings* in Washington DC in (I believe) 1985. "Burn the building. Burn Burrrrn Burrrrrn." ...is what one of the capitol wives had to say about Def Leppard's 'Pyromania' album cover. And only on a Frank Zappa album can you hear a high-powered politicically influential REVEREND let loose with the utterly lyrical phrase: "bend up and smell my anal vapor" HAHA! Hilarious stuff, while like I said - a bit creepy and discombobulating at the same time. This is easily one of Zappa's best 'Synclavier' pieces. However, the song I go back to the most on this album is 'What's New in Baltimore', which is just a gorgeous collection of Zappa-esque melodies and is then capped off in the second half with what is very simply one of FZ's finest and most emotional guitar solos ever.

Skinny Puppy - Rabies. Oh fuck yeah! GREAT album. This is my favorite SP album, right next to the abstract masterpiece 'Too Dark Park'. Rabies is by far their ballsiest, crunchiest, most aggressive album - as you will hear in tracks like 'Tin Omen' and 'Fascist Jock Itch'. The influence & guitar work of Ministry's Alien Jourgensen is very evident in these tracks. My favorite Puppy track of all time is also found here; the (vaguely) Manson family-inspired 'Worlock'. This track alone moved SP to the next level, and displayed the real versatility and depth this band was capable of. Let me know if you agree.

I'd say you did pretty fucking well with these two!

Tangento, you read my mind!

I just finished listening to the Zappa cd, which I fully enjoyed, and I was just about to head for Google in search of a transcript for the PMRC hearings. That "Porn Wars" track got me curious to see what all was said. Thanks for saving me the trouble.

I went on an online cd buying binge the last few days (surprised, huh) on Ebay, Djangos, a site selling Shawn Smith cds, and CD Baby... and they are starting to find their way to my door!!!
From Cd Baby I received:
* Proto - Proto (i listened to this online and it peaked my interest... imagine A Perfect Circle with a violin... very cool)

*Jimi Hazel - 21stcenturysouthbronxrockstar (jimi is the bad ass muth fucka from 24-7 Spyz and this is his solo cd that is in the same line as the metal-funk-groove-rock that makes me still listen to the Spyz to this day... I'm playin this cd now and I'm definitley not let down. Jimi has put the Spyz back together and a new album is due this year)

*Frank Bang - Secret Stash (good ole cd baby tossed this in as a freebie, can't complain about that can i?)

from ebay auction:
NO-MAN - Flowermouth (one of the better NO-Man releases that my friends have been trying to get me to listen to, appearances by Robert Fripp made this a must have for me)

Best thing i've heard in quite some time is an album by a group called WEEN entitled Mollusk.

Any fans of the Beatles(Slay I believe you would love this stuff)or later era Pure Genius would really get a kick out of this band. Highly recommended from the Mezster!

MP3's and stuff, very nice. And their new album is called "quebec", extra points to that. Plus, the Chocolate & Cheese cover rules!

Haha, it seems like forever since I last heard of Ween. They seem to have a strong underground following here in Brasil. Gonna check "Mollusk" out, thanks for the tip, Mez!

Picking up the shopping again:

Judas Priest - Sin After Sin
I got that first Priest cd and then allowed myself to be distracted by other bands, so I'm finally getting back to the Priest. More coming soon.

Fantomas - Delirium Corda
I got lucky here because somebody neglected to remove an out-of-date sale sticker, so I got a sale price that should have no longer applied. Woohoo! As usual, I've never...oh, you know....

DVD - YES - YESSPEAK (2 disc documentary of the bands 35th year) already watched some, and will go back in a few minutes to continue. I really didn't agree how they said they NEVER deviated from their style or went commercial (Big Generator = SHIT). Anyway this should be a very nice show!!!

CD - Crowded House - Afterglow (I was on a Neil Finn kick a couple days ago and downloaded some cool shows and bought a bunch of solo and band cds at great prices (I have NO self control when it comes to music)
