Brought in a few more things this week...

Vinyl...
- Sleep: Dopesmoker [2xLP black vinyl]
- Scorpions: Virgin Killer

CD...
- Culprit: Guilty As Charged [CD reissue from 2000]
- Judas Priest: Jugulator
- Judas Priest: '98 Live Meltdown
- Judas Priest: Redeemer Of Souls [deluxe 2xCD]
- Suicidal Tendencies: s/t album
- V/A: A Tribute To Judas Priest - Legends Of Metal

Culprit was the very first metal band I ever saw live! A little dated now, but I do still enjoy the heck out of this one! On the flip side, I am feeling like I may have taken the Judas Priest obsession a little too far with Demolition. I had generally avoided the Ripper Owens era... and while I think the guy has a decent voice, this record seems über-cheesy in a bad way, even for my questionable tastes, haha.

I agree with Demolition sounding cheesy, but I blame Tipton for the lyrics and not Ripper for the vocals. I do like it better than TubLo and Ram It Down.

Was in a Half-Price Books and found a copy of DRI's Definition album, still sealed and in a fucking longbox, haha. Wow!

You can kind of see it under the CD, but I also bought a copy of Martin Popoff's Fade To Black: Hard Rock Cover Art Of The Vinyl Age, for only $12. Pretty cool coffee table type book with a lot great heavy music cover art from 1965 through 1990, with little write-ups on all of them.

What do you think of the new Opeth AR? I know they've completely left metal behind now.....I like what I've heard so far. It took me a LONG time to get into Heritage.....in fact, I didn't really get it until I saw the band play a lot of those songs live....then it finally worked for me. Makes no sense at all.....

I went to a "garage sale" on Sunday in which this guy has about 60,000+ LPs for sale, all organized like a store, and very clean. Spent hours digging around and listening to him go on and on about various conspiracy theories and how things aren't as good as they were in the 60s-70s, haha. But, I did walk away with the following LPs and will be going back for more soon.

All Vinyl...
- Accept: Breaker
- Accept: Restless And Wild
- Cactus: 'Ot 'N' Sweaty
- The Doors: Full Circle
- Iron Butterfly: Sun And Steel
- Iron Butterfly: Scorching Beauty
- Jethro Tull: This Was
- Kansas: s/t album
- Kansas: Song For America
- Alexis Korner: Bootleg Him! [2xLP]
- More: Warhead
- Nazareth: Rampant
- Nazareth: Hair Of The Dog
- Ozzy Osbourne: The Ultimate Sin
- Steppenwolf: At Your Birthday Party
- Tomita: Kosmos
- Yes: Yesterdays
- Yes: Classic Yes
- Yes: Yesshows [2xLP]
- ZZ Top: Tres Hombres

Admittedly, a lot of this was filling gaps in my collection (and a touch of butt rock), but still a fun way to waste a Sunday afternoon.

Seeing songs performed live can get new perspective on things, so it makes sense actually...

As for 'Pale Communion', I prefer it over 'Heritage'. Cool songs and some great performances from the band. 'Heritage' was somewhat disjointed, this one works better for me. The 'metal' is gone but they went in other interesting directions.

Just picked up the new Opeth and was lucky enough to find a deluxe copy with a 5.1 mix Blu-Ray disc. I'm kind of on the fence with the 5.1 mixes of albums, but happy to have both options. The album sounds pretty awesome on first listen! Not metal, but these guys are churning up some pretty decent prog, IMO.

Also found Hawkwind's 'The 1999 Party' (live in '74) double CD for $8, so yeah...

Is that Hawkwind cd any listenable, XD? I've heard lots of Hawkwind live releases, some of them sound like crap, some are damn good. It seems Mr. Brock doesn't have any control over this outpour of live releases.

Uffe, thanks for posting the Pallbearer link, their first cd was great, I hope the new one continues this. Nice tip for Roadburn '15?

I love 5.1 mixes when they are done right and on albums that it works well with and really gives a good separation of sounds, instruments, and vocals. I've heard things on older King Crimson albums in 5.1 mixes that I didn't notice on the regular stereo mix (thank you Steven Wilson). Steve Wilson just announced that he is mixing YES Relayer for surround sound, which should be amazing. Most thrash and metal albums wouldn't really benefit from 5.1 but prog and stuff that is more layered definitely does. I would love to hear The Outer Limits, or Nothingface in 5.1.. they could do some cool shit with those!!!
Nice haul of vinyl XD. I miss not having off on weekends for yard sales or being in a town were thrift stores have the possibility of have secret treasures in their vinyl boxes. Shit I haven't been to a record convention in decades!!!

Hey AR, this Hawkwind album sounds pretty decent and it appears that Dave Brock was actually involved in the 1997 mixing of this particular release. It's got a nice selection of tunes from the period, similar to Space Ritual, but includes tracks from Warrior On The Edge Of Time and a live version of The Watcher, which is kind of cool to hear. Worth picking up for the right price.

Hey Dave, I'm with you on 5.1 mixes for certain prog records and agree that Steven Wilson is pretty much THE BEST at putting these together. Also agreed on metal releases... stereo is more than fine for most music (with good speaker placement & separation) and is generally my preferred way to take stuff in. I do dig the 5.1 releases, but it's kind of like a 3-D viewing experience for me... less immersive and more novelty. I do still try to get the 5.1 mix editions of certain albums, so definitely not dismissing it. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out over time, as formats evolve, etc.

The new Ace Frehley album is fucking excellent.

There's two clunkers ("The Joker" and "Immortal Pleasures") and one sorta boring tune (the instrumental) but the rest of the album rocks more than enough to make up for those.

All the best,
