Pretty ok, well played, lots of energy etc. Shame they'll never win a price for their originality. Earlier stuff reminded me of Slayer ('The Force'), Tallica ('In Search Of Sanity'). This one sounds like recent Exodus stuff. Things could be worse.

Hex, I wasn't blown away by the new DT either, but did find it better than Octavarium. I was hoping it would have the balls that Train Of Thought did which I felt was their best in a long long time. I am looking forward to the dvd and hearing how some of these songs are mixed for 5.1, and the documentary might be interesting (maybe). I thought Repentance was a very different song for the band in the feel of it, and I enjoyed how they revisited one of the songs from Train Of Thought. It had a vibe that I haven't heard them deliver since Kevin Moore was in the band, and Petrucci didn't spew off his usual million notes per second and actually made for a nice moving piece.

Cornell's solo cd is pretty interesting to say the least. I think in the studio Chris has a great voice and he can pen some moving songs. I really dug the groove of his first solo cd Euphoria Morning, not to mention the few solo songs that appeared on some soundtracks, so I was looking forward to hearing this new and glad to see him get out of the Audioslave camp. The new cd is very soulful. the first track is similar to what he did in Audioslave, pretty rockin with a good groove, but the rest of the album is pretty laid back, nothing maindblowing or earth shattering, just good songs. He covers Billie Jean, yes the Michael Jackson song, and makes it his own. A lot of songs have a bluesy feel and once in a while he tries something new with his voice. Cornell just seems to do what he wants to do with this album with no expectations. With a fewq more spins I'll either really start to like it, or it'll bore me to tears.

The Decemberists Her Majesty
Dummy Burger In Sorte Diaboli (actually quite good)
Queens Of The Stone Age Era Vulgaris (different, definitely needs more listening)
Trelldom Til Minne... (primitive raw black metal, yet very atmospheric)

Upon further plays of Cornells new cd, I'm really diggin' it. If you like Chris's vocals, he really delivers on this album. More diversity in the songs than I had previously stated.

I had a chance to listen to a few minutes of the surround mix on Dream Theater's new album and was impressed by the excellent separation of sound, very well done indeed and they really made good use out of all the channels. I really enjoy the 5.1 format and wish more bands would mix their albums like this. It would also help with sales since I don't think it would be possible to use file sharing with the dvd-a surround mix, and if it is I doubt the quality would be worth it. It makes for a much more enjoyable listen when done properly.

Alright, just received my haul of Eyehategod material:

In the name of Suffering remastered + bonus tracks
Take as needed for Pain remastered + bonus tracks
Dopesick remastered + bonus tracks

Southern Discomfort
Preaching the "end-time" Message

And I even threw in Michael D. Williams's book "Cancer as a Social Activity: Affirmations of World's End"

It felt pretty nice knowing all $80 were going to the band.

It's time for this month's extreme metal week!

LOCK UP - Play Fast Or Die - Live In Japan;
DARKTHRONE - Preparing For War (Deluxe Ed.);
MAYHEM - Ordo Ad Chao;
ENSLAVED - Isa.

Plus, I got a DVD:

DEAD KENNEDYS - DMPO's On Broadway.

"Forty-five moments of perfection translated through a cautionary escape into the perils of the mundane, the inherent entropy in ultimate order, and the potential threats of eternal, unchecked apathy in civilization; all cloaked in musical expression so thoughtful, creative and forward thinking that almost a quarter-century later, few can even comprehend it, much less match it." After my forays at Wacken I returned with this little bunch, and yes it's all vinyl

Anaal Nathrakh - Eschanton
Arkhon Infaustus - Filth catalyst, Orthodoxyn
Atrocity - Todessehnsucht
Deicide - The Stench Of Redemption
Marduk - Rom 5:12
Megadeth - United Abominations
Morgoth - Cursed
My Dying Bride - Symphonaire Infernus Et Spera Empyrium EP
Nile - Ithyphallic
Pungent Stench - Been Caught Buttering
Slayer - Christ Illusion
Sodom - Persecution Mania
Vader - The Art Of War, The Beast
Voivod - Katorz (finally!)

And four I picked up before I went...

Kate Bush - Aerial
Manowar - Gods Of War
Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb
Vital Remains - Icons Of Evil

Deicide and Pungent stench are black vinyls - both were released in the UK as picture discs only - WHY???

Manowar is over 3 vinyls, again why??? It's only 70 minutes long, 2 was enough!!!!

KISS - KISSology part 2 dvd (the Walmart version with a bonus 4th dvd from 1979 Largo Maryland Capital Center. Great marketing stategy where Best Buy has a different live bonus dvd and a bunch of other stores have an even different live bonus dvd for the initial run. After that it'll only be a 3dvd set, thus collectors need to purchase 3 different box sets from different retailers to see all the live performances... glad I'm not a hardcore KISScollector, but at $25 for a 4dvd set stuffed full of great concerts, videos, interviews etc it's a great deal) now to find 9 hours when I'll be able to watch all this stuff!!!

I got the new RUSH and listened to it a few times but it just doesn't leave me with the desire to play it again. Not much really hooked me or drew me in. There's some good stuff on there and a bunch of great instrumental pieces (which I probably like the best on the album). Worth picking up but definitley not their best effort. It might be better as a headphone listen instead of playing it while at work which is the only time I've spun it. Maybe I need to sit down crank it up and follow the lyrics and really experience the disc...

anyway, time to watch some of the KISSology dvd!!!!!

I too am curious about the new Rush, didn't have the "guts" to buy it yet.

Been buying a couple of goodies lately...

DARKTHRONE - Total Death (to replace my crappy Russian "2 on 1" copy of it);
ENTOMBED - Morning Star, Inferno (both at Fnac for a real bargain, 1/3 their normal price);
VENOM - Possessed (remaster).

And a really cool DVD:

MANOWAR - The Absolute Power (The Day the Earth Shook).

If not for anything else (the second DVD is more miss than hit with all that Fan Convention crap), the concert at Earthshaker Fest with all the band members, past and present, appeared to be a blast, plus the grand finale with "Battle Hymn", all eight members together at stage (with three drums and three guitars), plus an orchestra and a choir, was truly emotional. Wish I could have been there.

Somehow the new Rush didn't leave me with the desire to play it often either, even though it has some very good songs.

New stuffph: too many to mention.

Some very cool purchases:

Tomahawk Anonymous (killer!!!)
Deathspell Omega Fas - Ite, Maledicti, In Ignem Aeturnum
Pig Destroyer Phantom Limb

and lots of 'Krautrock' stuff (Popol Vuh, Faust, Klaus Schulze, etc...)
