I lived in Southern Indiana for a little while and used to see Transgression and FUCT all the time. FUCT in fact were guys I went to jr. high with in Germany, playing Jump Bug and listening to Motorhead. That band was cryptic and amazing. I think they were total acid-heads, but amazingly heavy, like a crazier COC circa Animosity. Last time I saw them play was in Washington DC circa 1991 -- they were listening to Treponem Pal's first album in the van. Transgression were oddballs, the natural outcome of a tiny city like Indianapolis where everyone was on their own trip. They were some of the only people in Indiana aware of the outside world, though, so they had a Napalm Death influence as early as 1987. They were rad, playing hyperspeed but writing catchy songs. Mike Williams from Eyehategod always reminds me of their spitting ratty-faced singer. John Zeps from Transgression turned me on to the this simple but great band from Greenwood, IN, called Drop Dead. They recorded about five demos on a Radio Shack mixer in the late '80s while their singer was on house arrest, and they totally kicked ass with pounding thrash. I feel like it's important to acknowledge the influence of Robitussin on the Indy scene, just for the sake of it. -- IAN
