I first read about Voivod in some interview that Quorthon from Bathory did to promote his "Destroyer of Worlds" album, i guess. I was a black metal kid and a big fan of Bathory, so I read almost all Quorthon-related interviews that was possible to find on the internet. So, on one of that interviews Quorthon was asked about his opinion on Voivod:
"I used to hate them, because I absolutely don't get their sci-fi theme back then, but now I think that they are genius".
Later on, I started to expand my musical range and discover the new bands, new musical styles, always wanted for more and more, and eventually get stumbled by "Killing Technology" album on youtube.
The artwork got my attention, and I totally like it at the very first second I saw it. You know, the majority of sci-fi-related album covers I saw was insanely laughable (just look at front cover of "Interstellar Experience" by Assassin, for example.) But this one was really interesting. It was dark, scary in a good way, great stylized, with a lot of minor details here and there. Just seeing image of this half-mechanical semi-insectoid creature (that was my first impression) who flying towards the planet with definitely hostile motives was... like... wow!
Unfortunately, I didn't manage to get into the music at that time. I just wasn't ready for this kind of riffing, and everything seems to me way too strange.
But artwork was so amazing, that I decided to check out some other songs from different albums. So youtube recommended me a "Insect" from Negatron. Well, this one was way more catchy, but more primitive as well. Yet again, I really liked the artwork (that color palette was rare for metal albums, and I just loved that early computer graphics), but music didn't do that much to me.
So I get back to more "accessible" metal. I enjoyed Sodom, Kreator, Sepultura, some death metal bands as well and totally forgot about Voivod for a few years.
The revelation did finally happen in 2014, i guess. I get a little tired from metal bands and started to listen a lot a relaxing, progressive, industrial and other non-ordinary (for a metalhead) stuff. So, I was listening Space someday and eventually remembered that Killing Technology album and decided to give it a second chance.
At this time, I was totally hooked. The overall atmosphere just pierced my whole brain and I started to really enjoy some particular moments, and then the whole songs. For a few weeks, every evening I came home from work and listen the whole album non-stop, while doing my things, till I get to sleep. I love all songs from KT, but especially Overreaction, This Is Not An Exercise and Ravenous Medicine, which I consider the MOST mesmerising thrash metal song of all time. This song gives me a very special vibe, and ressurects some childhood memories about first time hearing Depeche Mode's "Some Great Reward" album and being fascinated by unusual cold, surreal and dark pop music, unheard before. The beginning riffs of the Ravenous Medecine gave me kind of similar feelings, like the first 20 seconds of DM's "Something to Do" song. I don't know why, honestly.
So, after a few weeks I decided to try Dimension Hatross and I liked it too. First song that really caught my attention was Brain Scan, but after a few spins I was totally addicted to the whole album too
Few years ago, I got my hands on awesome 90's japanese stereo system and decided to get a personal CD collection of albums that hold special place in my heart. Guess what album I bought first?
