Who here likes Porcupine Tree?
I think it was you, Schroeder, who was all blento over this band a while back.

Well. I am listening to the first album (1991 On the Sunday of Life) right now for the first time and i must say that DAMN this is GREAT! Unlike anything i have heard, although i hear many influences in it.
Little things like King Crimson, Hawkwind, Aphrodite's Child (666 Album), Rush, Tangerine Dream, etc, etc.

I can't believe it has taken me so long to hear this. I am ashamed! lol

Cheers!

I am the PT pusher but there are lots of others here who enjoy them also.
On the Sunday of Life is nothing like what they've evolved into. If you enjoy that album (my least favorite) you have a great ride picking up the rest of their catalog. Their latest THE INCIDENT could very well be their best release that packs everything the band is capable of doing (so far) into one incredible album.
Enjoy the journey.

In Absentia was my point of entry to Porcupine Tree. I've been exploring their catalog ever since.

I agree that if you like On The Sunday Of Life, you're in for a great ride.

Their live DVD "Arriving Somewhere" lives in my DVD player (unless it's a Netflix night). It's the soundtrack to doing stuff around the house at this point.

I am really into Progressive Rock a whole bunch right now, and enjoy listening to the Internet Radio PR station i have saved.

Every now and then they play some PT, which is excellent, but i seem to dig this first album more than anything else i have heard..so far.

I still need to listen to the rest. 2nd, 3rd, so on. See how they have developed over the years.

At the moment, i am listening to a 3-disc compilation called 'The Best Prog Rock Album In The World...Ever!'
It has a good selection & some things i never heard before.

Has anyone ever heard the band...THE FROST?
The album Milliontown is definitely worth getting. You guys would really like it.

Other cool bands....

Camel
Ozric Tentacles
Iluvitar

They keep playing (on the Radio) a lot of Dream Theater, whom i am not into so much.

Anyways. Cheers!

I've been into Ozrics for many many years and have most of their early catalog. it's been a while since I've purchased anything new from them.

A high school friend of mine, Dennis Mullen is the guitarist in Illuvatar. Very classic Genesis vibe. I remember going to see them when they first started playing and I still lived in the Baltimore area.

You'll be in for a mind blowing experience the more the get into Porcupine Tree. On The Sunday Of Life reminds me a lot of Pink Floyd when Barret was still in the band... quirky, poppy, bizzarre prog rock. This album was before Steven Wilson found other musicians to be in the band and everything is pretty much played and sung by him with lyrical help provided by his friend Alan Duffy. The band member names were all fictitious and OTSOL was a compilation of Wilson's early demo tapes (and mega rare) "The Nostalgia Factory" and "Tarquin's Seaweed Farm". Once OTSOL was released and then "Up The Downstairs" came out, fans started requesting live performances from Porcupine Tree, Wilson then set off to assemble the band by recruiting Chris Maitland on drums, Collin Edwin on bass, and Richard Barbieri (previously of Japan) on keyboards to fill the seats. "The Sky Moves Sideways" was the first real release as a true band yet still mostly a Wilson project. "Signify" would be the real PT debut where the band was more of a democracy although Wilson still holds the presidential seat as main creator.

your PT 101 lesson is over... now go study by putting on headphones and getting lost.

You might want to check out Wilson's other projects:
NoMan (with Tim Bowness on vocals... Porcupine Tree actually started as a side project from NoMan which was Wilson's first and main band)
Bass Communion (ambient)
Incredibly Expanding Mindfuck (or I.E.M.) (experimental kraut rock)
Blackfield (prog pop with Israeli superstar Aviv Geffen)
his solo material is also damn good and "Insurgentes" is a fantastic album

I've only got Fear of a Blank Planet but I love it very much. Took me a while to get into his voice, but thats teh same with Geddy Lee.

Should get more PT but the thing with music as rich as this is that I take a long time to digest each album, so I think I'll be ready for another one by 2011.

"Fear Of A Blank Planet" is a good album, but one of the least listened to, for me. "Deadwing" and "Lightbulb Sun" are almost ritualistic listens for me these days.

"Last Chance To Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled", and the hard-to-find "Mother And Child Divided" are a couple favorite tracks as well.

SIGNIFY was my first PT purchase which took a long time to sink in and get me hooked to buy more of their catalog. LIGHTBULB SUN has a song titled RUSSIA ON ICE which I couldn't get enough of for the longest time and had to crank it to 11 whenever I played it and it's probably the track that started my complete addiction to the band.

Huge thanks to you schroeder for turning me on to PT. I think I started with In Absentia, but I've loved every one of the releases you sent me way back when. FOABP is awesome and was a real treat live. Now, that's the other PT addiction...seeing them live over and over. Expensive, but always worth the trip.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of their releases Kula. I play the 2 cd Stars Die a lot here at work.

Definitely some interesting history about PT.
Thanks for that Schroeder.

By the way, while i am thinking about it...
Does anyone in here have the album by the long defunct band MARY, MY HOPE?
The one with the song 'Suicide King' on it.
They were from Scotland i think.

Ok. Back to being lost in my Headphones.

I too, can thank the vvfan board for influencing me to check out Porcupine Tree.

I started with In Absentia in 2007, (It was the lowest priced one on Amazon.com) and now have everything from Lightbulb Sun thru the Incident + The Stars Die 2cd set. & Arriving DVD.

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. Though, I prefer the song oriented rock stuff vs. the earlier trippy dippy stuff

If you haven't heard the band O.S.I. they are worth picking up. The 2 main members are Kevin Moore (ex-Dream Theater keyboards and also has a project called Chroma Key which is great), and Jim Matheos (Fates Warning guitarist). Mike Portnoy drummed on the first 2 releases (Office Of Strategic Influence & Free). Gavin Harrison (of Porcupine Tree) drums on the latest release BLOOD. Steven Wilson has a guest spot on the first album singing "shutdown". Sean Malone plays bass on the first release. Tim Bowness (of SW other band NoMan) and Michael Akefeldt (of Opeth) both lend their vocals to individual tracks on BLOOD. Moore handles vocals on all other tracks, and he's got a great voice for this music.
Great music, great grooves, great lyrics... a must have for your collection.

I have the first OSI album and it didn't really impress me that much. I mean, it's a good cd etc. but somehow I won't find myself listening to it very often. Also I'm not fond of Moore's vocals though I prefer him over Labrie any day.

I discovered PT when 'The Sky Moves Sideways' came out. Lovely album. All their cd's are great actually.

Holy Shit! The singer from Mary, My Hope (James Hall) and I are very close friends. I'll ask him if he has any of those albums left. He was living here at the time of Katrina and may have lost them though. His place took over 8' of water.

He released a solo record on Geffen in '95 (very good), 2 albums with his band Pleasure Club a few years ago, and is about to put out a new record in a few months. He was just in for Thanksgiving and did played a show that Saturday night. Very intense performance, as always.

A little side note: He was the first choice to sing for Velvet Revolver (they were label mates at Geffen), but chose to stick with Pleasure Club at the time. Creatively, it was a very wise choice.

Just sent him a text. I'll let you know.

Holy smokes Nothingface! You are friends? How cool!
I used to have the (Mary My Hope)on Cassette...WAIT!...I STILL DO have the cassette! All the way over here in Croatia. lol.
Anyways, it is worn out pretty bad from my over-playing it, and i am looking for those tracks on MP3 or the CD.

What a fantastic album that was for me. Let him know that too! Looking forward to his response to you.
I am sorry to hear about his loss in Katrina.

So they are not from Scotland then?
