It's a sad day, people. mp3.com is finally closing down, and all the music files are being deleted.

Quite apart from keeping my own stuff on there (86 tracks/8 artists and counting) I've found a massive amount of brilliant, raw, undiscovered talent and become friends with many fellow musicians around the world.

It's had a lot of bad press, not least from musicians who expected it to be something it's patently not (i.e., a record company or even some way to break into the mainstream...) but I've always loved it, so it shall be sorely missed in the Helicopter household.

Anyway, here's part of a mailshot I got from mp3.com artist support:

"Please be advised that on Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at 12:00 PM PST the MP3.com website will no longer be accessible in its current form.

MP3.com's content administration tools will remain available until the site is redirected on December 2, 2003. Please note, however, that promptly following the removal of the MP3.com website, all content will be deleted from our servers and all previously submitted tapes, CD-ROMs and other media in our possession will be destroyed. We recommend that you make alternative content hosting arrangements as soon as practicable."

I tell ya what, man... this is not good. This fully reeks with the corporate stank of greed &/ or RIAA corruption.
