My wife and I rented Punch-Drunk Love this past weekend. I was really looking forward to seeing this one, since I really enjoyed Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Hard Eight. I couldn't BELIEVE how aggravating and pretentious I thought this ended up being. I'm actually a fan of quirky and offbeat films, but this just reeked of 'look at how quirky and offbeat my movie is!'. Those of you who've seen it know what I'm talking about when I say 'What the HELL does that little piano have to do with anything???'. I'm sure P.T. Anderson could explain its importance in the scheme of the movie and its relevance to the theme of extremes of love and hate, serenity and violence, blah blah blah, but I just was ready to punch my fist through my monitor. The first 10 minutes are excruciating. However, I did want to watch the whole thing, since the story itself is actually quite interesting. It's the execution that puts me off. If he had done away with the overexposed lighting effects and the piano vignettes, I suppose he would have had himself an entertaining movie. Perhaps ih his goal was to provoke a strong reaction - regardless of whether it was positive or negative - then Anderson succeeded here. Your review? Agree? Disagree?
