To go along with the guitar thread, what album or song has the best damn drum sound you've ever heard? I have a few faves:

Slayer - Gemini - it's the last track on Undisputed Attitude. The snare is ugly as hell and the bass drums kick you right in the chest. The fact that Bostaph is an amazing drummer doesn't hurt either!

Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance - mostly for the snare, which is the biggest, most metal snare ever recorded.

Iron Maiden - Piece Of Mind - I still say this is their best sounding album ever.

Vroom beat me to it I see, I was just about to say Danny Herrera. He really does have an amazing drum sound, especially on 'Order of the Leech'.

I always mention this guy in drummer threads but...
GENE HOGLAN!!!

Probably his best drum sound is on SYL's self titled album or City, but it's all about the drumming...

Zach Barocas - Jawbox (1996 self-titled)

Probably the coolest rock drumming of all time, IMO. Very abstract, jazz-oriented, mathcore. Great organic production, too.

KISS: Creatures of the Night Eric Carr's monster drum sound on this album is unmistakeable. It'll knock walls down.

The Police: Ghost in the Machine Stewart Copeland always gets a great sound, but this album was the pinnacle.

QOTSA: Songs for the Deaf Dave's Grohl's sound was razor-sharp and his performance was an excercise in precision.

Tim Alexander also gets a nod for great tone captured on record.

I'm with Warcorpse on the Helmet album and with Nothingface on the Kiss album.

Plus, even if he helped to ruin Metallica, Bob Rock is a master of drum sounds, and he seems to get even better with time. Check the "Reload" album for proof. Crap songs, clear and huge drum sound!

for some reason, i dusted off Danzig II and III for listening to in my car this week, and, like nuclear infusion pretty much said, Biscuits is a fucking interesting drummer, amazing to take such simplistic songs and make the drums something you can listen to as a track by themselves. ill also add Away, John Stanier (both Helmet and Tomahawk),Bill Stevenson, Ward, Grohl, Bjork, Bordin and Lombardo, of course.

Right. Chuck was great and Danzig won't be the same without him. I saw him play live three times and he always stood out. I grew up with drums in the house as my dad was a jazz drummer for twenty years. I appreciate his small kit, and his simple, yet imaginative fills. "Pain in the World" being one of my favorites.

Boy, these two threads remind of the good old days back on Yurinet. My all time favorite drum sound:

Flaming Lips- The Soft Bulletin

I know they have to be using some major reverb or something on this album. What an amazing sound!!! Really what seperates this piece of music from other attempts at psycadelica I think is the production of the rhythm section. A marvel to experience and any of you people out there with an ounce of open-mindedness should check this album out.

I'll have to check out his stuff. I just remembered an old MindFunk album I have (with ride and drive, big house burning, etc) that had some good production and good music performances on it. I think if the vocals were better, I would've liked that album more.

I have always been a sucker for a double bass sound. I think this is what got me going on Rainbow many years ago! Anyone ever try using a double bass pedal for a single drum? I also like heavy compression like what you would find on Judas Priest's British Steel. It also is nice if the drummer knows how to properly tune the drums! Besides that, I guess its just a matter of having as many microphones as possible on your setup - you gotta blow the eardrums in everyone in the hall! Oh yeah, one other thing, you've seen people put padding in their bass drums? Well, that crazy Blacker than Blacky dude uses concrete bricks! Maybe he's afraid of accidently kicking the drum into the audience...

Bricks....hahahaha. Thats funny.
I prefer a good padded drum weight though.

Here is the ultimate King Kula / Satan Setup:

15" Wood Snare. Ludwig. White Coated Heads on top. Thin on Bottom.
6" 8" 10" Remo Roto-Toms
13" 14" 16" 18" Sonor Toms. Remo Pinstripe Oil Heads on Top. Thin on bottom.
24" Sonor Bass Drum. Remo Pin Stripe on Top, Thin Logo-Head outer.
6" 10" 12" 16" 14" 18" Paiste Cymbals.
12" 18: UFIP China Types.
Roland V-Drum Electronic Percussion

I would also like to add that the BEST Snare Drum sound i have ever heard
is on this song:

XTC - 'Senses working Overtime'

They used to play that Video a lot on MTV.
I dont know who that Drummer was....but i fell in love
with his snare sound on that song.

GORF!....You mentioned Barrimore Barlow!
Good to see another BB fan out there!
I wonder what the guy is doing now.

You're absolutely right. First I didn't know, Grohl is playing with QOTSA. Heard the drumming and thought... wow! Then I looked at the booklet and surprise, surprise. In "Go With The Flow" Grohl's drumming sounds very similar to Away's style (Phobos, Ion, Lobster), didn't he?
