Has anybody here heard or liked any of Quorthon's solo work...Or any recent Bathory releases?

Yes sir, i most certainly did.

The "Album" cd wasnt bad (except the first song on it sounds like a total rip off of Stone Temple Pilots' "Sex Type Thing") as they're a few good songs on it, but it tends to get repetitious cuz most songs sound the same.

But the best he did as simply Quorthon was the "Purity of Essence" double-cd. I love it. I bought it sometime in '97 and i still listen to it regularly. I refuse to call it a metal album cuz it really isnt. It's a great rock album, with great guitar. I think Quorthon's talent as a guitar player shows much more on there than on the Bathory albums. His singing voice is great on this as well. But most importantly, there are just great songs on it. Maybe releasing this as a double album was a little too much cuz obviously when there are that many songs (23 i think), you're bound to have filler in there somewhere.

As for Bathory itself, Requiem (94) and Octagon (95) were absolute garbage. Just speedy crap that doesnt go anywhere. I'm not sure what the fuck he was trying to do there. In '96 he finished an album that got partially recorded in the '80s, which turned out to be the Blood On Ice album. Not bad. Epic stuff not unlike Manowar at times.

And the last one (Destroyer of Worlds, 2001) was a mixed bag. There were 5 or 6 great slower paced songs that couldve been on Hammerheart, and more pointless garbage from the mid '90's. Oh and his vocals are insulting on the whole album. Bad.

There's a new one comin' out at the end of this month called Nordland 1, and part 2 will follow in january. I havent seen a promo yet so i dunno how that will sound. More "Hammerheart" -type stuff i assume..

"Under the Sign of the Black Mark" back in '87!"

The whole atmosphere of that album is "black."

Yeah!
"Under The Sign" is still my favorite Bathory album. 'Equimanthorn!'

Love that song!

I recently heard some samples from 'Nordland 1' somewhere. Not bad. Really not bad. Much in the same vein as 'Hammerheart'. Musically tighter than ever before. Vocals worse than ever before.
I'm not sure anymore (about anything), but I think I found them on the Black Mark site. Only excerpts, not full songs.

Well, check out the promo stuff (small song parts, actually) and judge by yourself. I didn't like it, I'm satisfied with only one Manowar.

And this is the cover:

Shit, I've never heard any Bathory, ever!

Only in the last three months have I heard (for the first time) Venom, Metal Church and Holy Terror. And to think I call myself a metal fan.

Is there anywhere online where I can hear a few classic Bathory tracks? If they're as fucking useless and shitty as Venom then forget it.

hehe... obviously the old Venom stuff is insulting as far as musicianship goes, but they're Venom so you cant really get mad at 'em. Since you werent there to appreciate the original effect of their venomousity, i suggest you track down the Resurrection album from 2000. Simply amazing. If you dont well fuck you.
