THE TWO ISRAELI SOLDIERS WERE CAPTURED IN LEBANON

The militant group Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers during clashes Wednesday across the border in southern Lebanon, prompting a swift reaction from Israel, which sent ground forces into its neighbor to look for them. Israel's military response by air, land and sea to what it considered a provocation last week by Hezbollah militants is unfolding according to a plan finalized more than a year ago.

In the years since Israel ended its military occupation of southern Lebanon, it watched warily as Hezbollah built up its military presence in the region. When Hezbollah militants kidnapped two Israeli soldiers last week, the Israeli military was ready to react almost instantly. [SFGate 7/21/06]

Do you get it yet?

Israel sent troops across the border into Lebanon. They then claimed the captured invaders were "kidnap victims" and launched their attacks.

It seems the rest of the world says...and knows...different.

In reality all we know is one version of events against the other - both sides will use whatever part of each version that makes their position look vindicated.

My posiiton is the same - Regardless of Hezbollah's usual acts of brinkmaship Israel's actions have been disproportionate. I feel for the ordinary civilians on both sides who are suffering because of two ideological opposites who seem to care little about the pain they are inflicting on each other and only seem interested in point scoring rather than actually resolving this situation diplomatically. This has the potential to set back the region by decades and I genuinely fear for the future if this escalates further. We all should hope that somewhere in all this madness that commonsense will finally prevail. Somehow I think that is a folorn hope.
