I am afraid, i almost didnt buy any new stuff in 2014.

I have bought a shitload of "old vinyl"

Lots of KISS, Iron Maiden, Coroner, Kreator, Desatruction, Sodom, Voivod, too much to mention.

New ones:

ACDC - Rock or Bust (pretty good i must admit)
Meshuggah - Koloss double vinyl signed by all band
Tryptikon - Last one

All vinyl.

I havent bought a cd in over 2 years now, since i became ADDICTED to vinyl.

Me buying KISS is getting out of hand now.. In 1,5 years i went from having 10 KISS lps to over 200... (shame on me....)

I bought nothing new in 2014. I may officially be old. I just don't care for anything coming out lately. Ben gave me a copy of the latest Goatwhore album, which is pretty good, but I didn't buy it.

I hear ya NF. But there are some good groups still putting music out. Just not in metal.

I had high hopes for the new Opeth but aside from one or two good tracks(I love the first song on there)it was a big letdown.

Here's another guy who is brilliant if you're in for esoteric jazz playing....don't cut it off after 30 seconds...he can do way more than just playing with his pedals:

NELS

And crap, nearly forgot...my number one for '14:

TRIOSCAPES

My list below.

1) Triptykon: Melana Chasmata
2) Opeth: Pale Communion
3) Exodus: Blood In Blood Out
4) Sanctuary: The Year The Sun Died
5) Agalloch: The Serpent And The Sphere

Honerable mentions (maybe just happy these bands are still around or need more time to digest): Judas Priest, English Dogs, Mekong Delta, Electric Wizard, Melvins, Sunn O))), Swans.

To be honest, the Triptykon is practically in a different class as the rest of my list by simply blowing away everything else that came out in 2014, seriously! I have a lot of love for the new Opeth and Exodus albums, despite some obvious flaws so they still round out my top 3. The new Sanctuary stands out since it far exceeded my expectations. After that, nothing else has really got me that excited, yet.

I did buy some new albums this year, but mainly old stuff, very few things really blew me away. Luckily the topic title was "top 5", a "top 10" would be too much.

My list is as follows:

9¾. Triptykon Melana Chasmata

--------------------

"Appearing like Ra"

Believe you're right...that new Triptykon was the only metal release worth getting in'14. How the hell did I miss that boat...gonna rectify that right now.

I'm loving the new Melvins track:

I'd say it's been a pretty healthy crop this year. And there's still a few that I haven't got around to picking up yet including Melvins, Trypticon, Orange Goblin, the list goes on...

Main reason I haven't picked those up yet is I like to buy from the band when they tour - cut out the middle man y'know - and that hasn't happened yet.

Are you guys saying it is a good idea not just to buy this album, but to actually listen to it? Are you serious? That idea is too insane to have possible crossed my mind.

Believe it or not, now I'm considering it. Let me see, which version should I put into my player now?..

I bought the Japanese cd edition. This is how the album supposed to be. The other versions lack an almost 8min. Track.
Hope that helps Hex.
After seeing some best of lists of 2014. I tend to completely agree with almost everyone's lists.
He He Lee that Trioscopes is zorn reeivented? Very good.
Anyways
All the best for you all, a great 2015.

Bongripper, haven't heard that name in a long time!

I guess my top five would have to be something like this:

Eyehategod - Eyehategod
Exodus - Blood In Blood Out
Triptykon - Melana Chasmata
KMFDM - Our Time will Come
Soundgarden - Echo of Miles

...And Goatwhore as honorable mention, Sammy gave us a CD hahaha. Great guys, they are only getting better over time.

this song is about listening to Pink Floyd and all the things in your life and everyone elses that go along with it. Kozelek makes me throw my guitar away.

How could I forget Mastodon? Maybe cuz I don't really listen to them much anymore. Switch them with Soundgarden, since that is just a compilation album.

I am so out of touch with today's music and new(er) bands, I might as well not even consider myself a music fan anymore. Oh well, fuck it
