I ran across this group recently thanks again to the excellent book by Wagner MEAN DEVIATION:

One of the few groups who has the VV vibe without directly copying them...like they have their own sound but you can definitely hear VV there. EXTREMELY F'ing cool:

VIRUS

Can anybody think of any other groups like this? You know, since we don't have anything else to do until the next album.....aside from buying Target Earth on cassette!

VIRUS is awesome! I especially love their second album "The Black Flux". Excellent stuff.

Mez, you convinced me to finally buy that 'Mean Deviation' book. It looks killer, now I have to find time to read the goddamn thing.

Can't think of any other similar bands right now, my brain is tired...

Being a colossal Residents fan, I've long been promoting DIMESLAND which has (one or more) Residents cohorts (see my "signature" at the bottom of my posts).

Anyway, a few weeks back, a new & as-yet unreleased Dimesland track was reviewed by Stereogum, and Voivod was name-dropped a bunch (and Martyr, once, as well). While I DO NOT think they "sound like Voivod" per se, this guy certainly thinks so, and the mathy qualities do provide a tip of the hat I suppose...

Here's the track: http://youtu.be/cYC1ZhqBFYM

Here's the review:

Dimesland – “Are They Cannibals?”
Location: San Francisco, CA
Subgenre: Progressive Thrash/Death Metal

"The Canadian thrash band Voivod has slowly become one of underground metal’s more “important” bands, as far as influence goes. Their groundbreaking use of jazzy dissonance in metal riffing opened the compositional floodgates for multiple generations of progress-minded metal acts, including contemporary faves like Gorguts and Deathspell Omega. Voivod have also spawned a number of direct stylistic children — most famously the Philly-based black/thrash band Vektor, whose logo is a direct pastiche of Voivod’s. But for my money, Dimesland better channels Voivod’s powerful spirit. This under-the-radar act has just one EP under their belt to date, and their upcoming first LP, Psychogenic Atrophy, doesn’t yet have a release date. But their pedigree is both novel and strong — several members are involved in the long-running art rock institution the Residents, though it’s not clear who. (Naturally.) “Are They Cannibals?” lives up to the association, slinging electrified thrash skronk with a jacked-up modern intensity that reminds me of current Voivod guitarist Daniel Mongrain’s old band Martyr. Keep your ear to the ground for this one. [From Psychogenic Atrophy, the details of which are a total mystery to us] –Doug"

Taken from entry #8 at: http://www.stereogum.com/1708451/the-black-market-the-month-in-metal-september-2014/franchises/the-black-market/

And as I stated above, click the link in my signature below to hear Dimesland's "Ghastly Maneuvering" from their ep, great stuff.

All the best,
PAULIE

Paulie, I'm hearing A LOT of Voivod in that tune; which is a good thing.

Well, while we're on the topic then, might as well toss this chestnut your way... Dimesland evolved from an earlier, similar but different band called Land Of Thin Dimes. Same guitarists, so there's still that discordant Piggy-type note choice and embracing of multiple time signatures. Dimesland is definitely a more distilled, more aggressive version of this earlier incarnation, so there it is. Here's a video from their one and only cd from '99.

AN UPDATE - DEC 9, 2014: The full album is streaming now on Invisible Oranges, check it out!

All the best,

PS Didn't mean to make this a Dimesland thread per se, still hoping to hear more suggestions from other folks!

Doesn't really sound like Voivod but kind of reminds me of Voivod by way of Die Kreuzen a little bit.

Motherfuckin' Virus rules. They played two shows in NYC last year, apparently their only shows ever in the US. I believe they are returning, though I'm not sure when, or where they will play.

I saw them at Roadburn, and wow. Amazing live too.

Old school band, forgotten album. Their most famous albums are death metal classics, nothing to do with Voivod.

Recently I revisited their forgotten 1996 release and was quite surprised to find lots of sound similarities to Eric-era Voivod. Industrialized and weird, I mean, not that it's a Negatron copycat or anything, but there is some Piggyish-weird vibe present. No wonder it didn't become as popular as their previous albums, although for a fresh listen it's quite cool.

I'm talking about Morgoth and their Feel Sorry For The Fanatic.

This group doesn't sound like VV at all but since there's nothing else to post about(there was an interview with Away but not really news there)....I'm sure Hex knows these guys but they're kind of obscure....I think only put out two albums. Both are very intense, well written prog-metal that I think a lot of people on here would like. Vocals are not my favorite but in the early 2000's this was trend(I don't think this has changed much either)...The second album is much more developed and diverse set of tunes. Excellent stuff...check them out. From France:
