Steeve & Chuck

Steeve Hurdle, 2011
quote:
Some very sad news to report for death metal fans. Steeve Hurdle, who manned the guitar for legendary death metallers Gorguts, has passed away. French-Canadian website coopfuneraireestrie.com posted an obituary for Hurdle, who died from “post-surgical complications” at the age of 41.

After Gorguts called it quits in 1993, the band re-formed in 1998. Hurdle was recruited to shred for Gorguts’ third release, ‘Obscura,’ which received massive acclaim from both critics and fans. ‘Obscura’ signified the next step in the career of Gorguts, providing their fans with a more challenging and twisted assault of brutality.

Hurdle left Gorguts after ‘Obscura’ to focus on his self-incarnated death metal project, Negativa. Although that band was active for 16 years, they only officially released a three-song, self-titled EP. Hurdle spoke of a full-length album having been written for Negativa, which he described as “more ambient and emotional.” Unfortunately, the full-length never came to fruition for Negativa.

Obituary on BraweWords

Obscura. He changed Gorguts from yet another death metal band into something completely different.

Negativa. Short but sweet, but it was just a teaser for better things to come. Will anybody step up and release the later recordings (possibly with overdubs), like they did for Piggy?

Extreme meditative metal. Both Obscura and Negativa cover photos feature people (band members and an unnamed yogi) in deep meditative state. No other metal albums before or after made this so explicit. This is not the music for headbanging, as extreme as it is. This is, strangely enough, for calming yourself down to pratyahara and deeper yogic states and hunting down the demons in your mind. Metalhead, this is the soundtrack to your samadhi, use it or lose it.

He spent his last years as a support worker at a homeless shelter in Sherbrooke, QC. Always willing to listen to other people, and helping them overcome their life challenges.

Rest in peace Big Steeve. May 20th, this is a sad day for metal. You will be sorely missed.
