Agalloch definitely benefited from the great sound in the Main Hall -- and the Cascadian forest backdrop looked gorgeous -- but it got a bit monotonous for me. No worries, more than enough to scout out rather than stick around til the end... Thursday was the first day, which is always a whirlwind. In this case: 1) Gira acoustic - he was grumpy and it wasn't a good introduction to the Patronaat venue, which I grew to appreciate over the course of the festival 2) Agalloch (see above) 3) Christian Mistress - more 'stevige rock' as we say in Dutch than I care for, and they seemed a bit nervous and over-rehearsed 4) OM - fantastic. "first day overwhelm" was already setting in and OM is the perfect pause that refreshes! loved seeing the 90 Day Men guy on keys/tambourine 5) Hammers of Misfortune - guitar overpowered keys/vox, back to OM! 6) Killing Joke - saw first half, but as sometimes happens at R-burn, something I thought I was going to really dig just didn't do it for me, off to Lord Vicar 7) Lord Vicar - room already packed, ok time for dinner then! 8 ) Orchid - Patronaat venue replaced the Midi Theatre this year, and on the first day certain things like ventilation and traffic flow hadn't been sorted, so it really was like visiting an orchid house -- hot and humid -- but unlike an orchid house, it reeked!! Luckily, the music was great, so I stayed for the last part. Then trying to get out of there, ugh, the "911 staircase" was awful -- hundreds of people trying to walk down as hundreds of people are trying to walk up, I couldn't help but wonder, "Is this going to be the Roskilde/Cincinnati edition of Roadburn?" Thankfully, by Friday it was less chaotic. Chaos is not always a bad thing, but not in a stairwell, please. 9)Ulver - mmm, another "thought I was going to love this, and it's not clicking..." moment 10) Spiders - A zippier version of Christian Mistress; from the land of Vroom! 11) White Static Demon/JK Flesh - totally unexpected Thursday highlight, worth braving the 911 stairs a second time. 12) VOIVOOOOD - in all honesty, when they started with Voivod and went on to the Prow using the same backdrops as last year & Snake and Dan in the same outfits, I had this twinge of disappointment. I had a fleeting sarcastic thought along the lines of: "Oh no, is this some kind of recession Roadburn set?" But then I realized that I had gotten spoiled last year (2x Roadburn, then two more club shows). What an ingrate, eh? And with that realization, I stopped trying to count the ways it seemed like last year, and focus on the here and now. Which was excellent, with Overreaction, Forlorn and Global Warning offering a wide spectrum of Voivod goodness. The backdrops featured some new artwork, too. And of course there was the debut of the new song, and the big surprise of "Man in the Trees" (before the even bigger surprise the following night). So yeah, my little 'been there, done that' hypercube tantrum at the outset was quickly silenced I think "Voivod" is a good opener in a small sweaty club, but in a massive, acoustically fab venue like the Main Hall, especially at the end of a superbusy first festival day, it might have been nicer to kick off with something like "The Unknown Knows" (ehmmm...I'll stop being an armchair quarterback now )

Oh Mez, do know that EOLB were frighteningly good live. I enjoyed the fuck out of their set - to hear those tunes live and watch h in action and that super fine alien of a man on bass (yikes, he's gorgeous) - all of it, the drums the geetars did I mention h in action?!?!? Fuck yes. That was righteous and grand indeed. Roland's booby tattoo, haha. Seriously h, I freakin' love your band. And Leslie: Dear Dear Dear Leslie. I owe you for that bike arrangement and completely apologize for not taking advantage. How do I contact you? I'd like to send you something via poste. My brain/body were a wreck that day as you saw me melt into that chair in the art gallery, so thanks for the bit o chocolate. Though I think I needed a blood transfusion and a liver transplant instead, haha. And as we can all agree: ULVER, wtf? Fuckin' drag of a set and I think I left after their 2nd tune...sad, cry, sad. Still, to see Rygg in the FLESH was good enough i suppose. Three huge cheers for KONG! Wow, amazing, amazing, mindblowing wall of sound and energy and that drummer can suck my titties anytime she wants, she kicked so much ass on drums. WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWWOWOW! Thanks Paul for amping us up about them - I had no idea what to expect and that band in particular made my soul bleed a rare light of happiness. I'd like to thank the nice Lady, Kim, at that bar that served the 90lb burger and the greatest glass of hot fresh mint tea I've ever had in my life! Bless the tea that soothed my dying body that day. And watching Igir, Jean-Francois, AR, Chewy drink those Kwak beers while I wished I were lying in a bed of grass surrounded by flowers and beaming sunshine - the memories are endless, you see? Not enough words to explain the Roadburn experience, but I do like Igir's: ROADBURNT! Back here in Albuquerque and I am missing the fuck out of you Evil & Violent Tea Drinking Drunks. To my Chalet roomies: CHEERS! Thanks for making my tea and eggs and Paul - that soup was magical! I'm still available for adoption so let me know when we can sort that out, haha! Oorlog. Igir. A sea of bicycles. Away's art ALL OVER THE PLACE. Jack fuckin' Luminous and our pack shouting at the top of our lungs: "IGOR! IGOR! IGOR! IGORRRR! IGOR! IGOR!" And yes, Paul's shouting, "Coroner's on in 15 minutes!!" Excellent. Oh, and being stranded in the lovely city of Dublin for a night on my way home didn't suck either. What a beautiful, beautiful place - hope to make it back there someday. Signed, One Happy Arsed Roadburner -------------------- What the fuck is wrong with drinking tea?

Yeah. I missed so many good bands on Saturday as I drank pint after pint of Guinness as if I were a huge 212 pound man of steel. And very happy to have met Diane Kamikaze in the flesh! We swapped some stories over dinner at the Temple of Oorlog one day. She rules. And on that note, glad to have made new violent good friendly mates: Deano from Australia and his mate David (I think), Paul from Manchester, Igir's French friend Jean Francois (what'd you do with the pink tokens Igir?), Sato the gorgeoous homeless Japanese boy and on and on and on.... -------------------- What the fuck is wrong with drinking tea?

Great pics, thanks to all for sharing! Somehow the very fist "VVF Meeting" came to mind, Meg, Uffe and Chef going to England and meeting Harry, Elena and Emlyn. It's awesome to see how things evolved from that! Thanks again guys for sharing those great moments with us who couldn't be there...Lucky bastids! -------------------- "Forty-five moments of perfection translated through a cautionary escape into the perils of the mundane, the inherent entropy in ultimate order, and the potential threats of eternal, unchecked apathy in civilization; all cloaked in musical expression so thoughtful, creative and forward thinking that almost a quarter-century later, few can even comprehend it, much less match it." Luuuuuna! No worries, luv -- there will always be a bike or 2 (billion) for you here. And chocolate! The Guinness people heard about you, hence the unplanned delay in Dooblin -- they were hoping to offer you an endorsement deal of some kind My email's in my profile, drop me a line & I'll send you my nailmail addy! Looking at Karl's photos (and scaring the cats in the process due to loud uncontrollable laughter), something dawned on me. In Dutch, we call someone who is the life of the party a "gangmaker" (ghhaahnngmaacker -- all of you who were here over the weekend know how to make that sound by now, even if the Brabant version is slightly less grindcore). Behold Paulussie: Iron Gangmaker! Bear-shaped potato chip contact lenses + Hellhammer shirt = sheer comic brilliance.

BTW did anybody catch The Obsessed??
A little bit. It was good but didn't quite click. "It's not you, it's me!" Saturday was possibly the most Bizarro World Roadburn experience I've ever had: the two sets I predicted would be my highlights were eclipsed by three about which I had zero or even negative expectations: 1) 40 Watt Sun - grudgingly accompanied my intrepid companion P, thinking it was going to be dull and whiny, only to find myself instantly spellbound -- utterly gorgeous 2) Church of Misery - normally a very high energy band but too many technical difficulties early on meant no flow, and visuals-wise I'm so bored with the serial killer shtick 3)Saviours - got into the Green Room nice and early for a good place, only to make someone happy by leaving early 4) Purson - *the* overhyped dissapointment for me. The singer may have looked like a Hammer horror goddess, her voice was reedy and she had a crappy attitude. Early on, she primly announced, "That was [whatever song]. Minus the second bar. That's what happens when you don't get a soundcheck." Is that so? I wasn't aware soundchecks are why bands know how to play their own songs. Go back to the rehearsal room, girlfriend. And tell your bandmates to mind the weed. It wasn't just their lack of skillz, however. I had reported to the EOLB stage way early, secured a place up front, then 2 seconds before they started this couple elbowed their way in front of me and they smelled like mildew-infested laundry and sunbaked garbage. On the verge of dry-heaving at both Purson & these two, I was out of there 6) The Obsessed - hmm, looking back on it today, I can see why I didn't stay too long, after such a promising start, day three had taken a turn for the WTH. I was really wishing that the original schedule (with Voivod playing their second show on Saturday instead of Thursday) hadn't been rearranged. 7) Sleep - obviously, the vast majority of folks were rabidly anticipating this, and I was one of them. Got in early, secured a great place on the balcony, and then...nothing. "this isn't sending me..." Necros Christos - cooookie monnnsterrrrr! Oh scheisse, the vox had me cracking up so bad. It had been so long since I'd heard any totenmetal live. After two songs, I thought, "Right: two strikes so far...Tombs, then?" Tombs. Tombs? Not Tombs - I don't like them, do I? Aren't they some big tuff guy shouty nuyawk blackened thingamajiggee metalcore whoozits-- my intrepid companion urged me to stop overthinking and move it up the 911 stairs. And behold: 9) TOMBS Omg they were fantastic. Everything I had been missing up until that moment (flow, nuance, power, intrigue, sonic brutality, musicianship), I found. And then two songs later - they were gone. Blast! Definitely a highlight, didn't see that coming. 10) Bongripper - another blinding highlight. Wow. Crazy good. Thank you, Patronaat, for saving day three!
