Holy shit they mentioned Winnipeg! That club must be the Royal Albert. I had no idea they were ever here except for when they came here with Venom in 85.

Great article!

I enjoyed the hell out of that piece. The early thrash days is a part of history that totally intriques me... Surprised that it came from Decibel which is renowned for all its mallcore crap.

I saw Bitch, Slayer and Overkill in like 1981-82 (83 maybe?) at the Country Club in Reseda CA.

All three bands were absolutely horrible.

I really enjoyed this article as well, thanks Maldororz!

Funny they mentioned switching instruments in the early days as that happened when I saw them play in Seattle in May of 1985... although they blamed a faulty guitar amp that time if I remember. I still have this vivid memory of them playing Chemical Warfare with one guitar (Hanneman), Kerry King on bass, and Tom just singing, haha. Great fucking show!

Great times all around actually... Leaving the show, cars blasting Venom or early Metallica, and a 15 year old myself thinking "this is not my older brother's kind of metal", haha. I consider the thrash movement among the most interesting... some real trailblazing going on then and it really did feel like a kind of movement overall, music and attitudes were changing.

Buried, somewhere, I have a vid of Slayer live in LA in 83 (or late 82?) and the sound is through the board - And for 3/4 of the show, Tom is pumping his right fist instead of plucking the bass, so there's almost no bass playing in the entire thing - It's like he couldn't play and sing at the same time, totally hilarious because the sound is from the board so you hear every note he hits, which ain't many!

Very metal. I miss that.

All the best,
PAULIE

Lombardo: I remember driving the Camaro somewhere in Montana with Tom and Kerry. I hit black ice, and the car just spun out. I let go of the steering wheel, and we hit a ditch. Everybody was okay, though—we were lucky. I remember we were listening to Voivod when it happened.

Blacky told me (whilst driving my car...) that he span his car on black ice back in the day - but I can't remember what he said was blasting out the stereo. Be funny if it was Slayer!

AHA! That's gotta be it! The club is in the basement there and I've seen a vid from around that era of Verbal Abuse playing there. It's like 2 doors down from the Albert. When I was gigging around town those were 2 of the places we'd play the most. Ah the memories...
