I heard Slayer won but thankfully did not show up. Here's a good article:

On the other hand, as someone commented on BBM, it'd have been cool if they had attended the ceremony and thanked Satan in their speech.

Which reminds me of that classic Grammy goof:

quote:
Jethro Tull over Metallica (1989): Notoriously slow on the uptake, the Recording Academy didn't get around to adding a Heavy Metal Grammy until 1989. Even then, only two of the nominees made sense – Iron Maiden and Metallica. Def Leppard was one Aquanet can away from being a Hair Band, the Grateful Dead was hippie music, and prog-rock Jethro Tull was far too ponderous to be considered "hard," let alone "metal." Metallica was the obvious favorite. When it didn't, Jethro Tull was forced to accept its award under a shower of outraged boos. Meanwhile, in a "Dewey Wins!" turn, Metallica was saddled with thousands of "Metallica – Grammy winners" T-shirts. Tull's victory was so incongruous, it seemed the gods were punishing Metallica for its hubris. In 1992, when Metallica finally won the first of six Grammys, the '89 loss was not forgotten. In his acceptance speech, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich told the audience, "Thanks to Jethro Tull for not putting out an album this year."

oh that would've been great to have Slayer thankin the lord of the underworld for making all this possible, for without his guidance and love none of this would mean so much to so many people!! Maybe shed a tear as well!

Didn't watch. I'm not intereseted anymore since '89! god, I mean SATAN, has it been that long!? Good to see the Chixie Dicks win! Hmmm, maybe this is an unpopular war!

theres only so many double kick drum'd songs with singers shouting the F word you can take before it becomes extremely dull.

On those occasions when Lars isn't being an annoying little fuck, he usually reveals a sharp wit.

I watched the Grammys with my girlfriend. I gotta admit, she's got me into the Dixie Chicks. Say what ya want, but they are cool and can write, play and sing great tunes. I just purchased their new cd for her... produced by none other than Rick Rubin, and I'll also say it's way better than the Chilli Peppers album he also produced, and will probably be better than the new Metallica album he's going to be producing. I was glad to see the Chick clean up and perform. It is a damn shame that metal is represented more at these events but it was cool to see the list of nomminees in that article... all heavy. It seems "they" have a better understanding of the genre and who belongs in it.

I watched the first 3:30 of it, then promptly turned it off. Anything that could and did follow was utter shit anyway, both winners and losers.

Well...

Got to admit that Copeland is a great drummer and those first solo LPs by Summers (the ones with Fripp) are cult favourite of mine.

But... Roxanne? What about Dead end job?

I didn't watch the Grammys. Angry for 4 hours isn't my bag.

Thanks for the YouTube link. My Girlfriend and I miss the Police opening, and were bummed, and then I thought I saw them have a thing for Stewart Copeland in the MEMORIAL TRIBUTE part of the show where they have pictures of all the people in the industry who died last year and I freaked out... luckily he's still alive and kickin, but I still can't figure out what exactly I saw.

A&M Records is behind the "Roxanne" thing. It's the 30th anniversary of its release as a single. At the press conference the next day, they played a few more songs, including "Voices Inside My Head" and "When The World Is Running Down".

The Copeland referred to in the tribute is Ian Copeland, Stewart's brother.
