WOW, I didn't know it was a book. I remember seeing the animated movie when I was a liitle kid and being totally floored. They also showed it at the Baltimore Science Center when I was little and I just couldn't walk away from it.
I have to get this on DVD if it's out there.

The band Failure has an album highly influenced by it:

Yep, it was me, Syl! Glad you liked it. I'm a big fan of Wul (who was a dentist, btw). If you thought that one was trippy, go read "Nôô", his last novel written in 1977. It's something!

And schroeder, yes it's available on dvd format. I've seen it at the video store. I should replace my vhs copy of it (recorded when it aired on tv!)

Thanks again, I'll check for the Failure album and the Nôô book.

I'll like to do a short animation movie visually inspired by the Fantastic Planet.
I never see an other animated film with that kind of look.

René Laloux also done Gandahar aka : Light Years that is cool too. It got a 70's prog vibe, with Caza artwork...

And Time Masters with Moebius

Time Masters (Les Maîtres du temps) is based on another Wul novel, "L'Orphelin de Perdides".

i was listening to this cd the other week and it's been a while since I played it... anyway, I was surprised when I heard "the nurse who loved me" which has now been made famous by A PERFECT CIRCLE. And to think I've had this cd since 1996 and never made the connection after APC recorded it... DOH

I'll definitley be purchasing the dvd of this. I'm assuming this guys books are also transcribed in English.

Ha! Re-watched "Fantastic Planet" last night, and it's, well, fantastic!

Extra points for the very trippy music by Alain Goraguer, who used to be Gainsbourg's arranger on his early albums. I think Goraguer took inspiration from early 70s Gainsbourg albums... Trippy and funky!

Haaa, Gainsbourg...

Remember in April 86, when he said to the other guests on a prime-time television show (Champs-Elysées), after Whitney H finished her "song", "I want to f***k her..."
- Whaaaaat??, she screamed.

The audience was laughing.

Man! In front of millions of viewers, live!
Forget the scandalous Sex Pistols. They were nothing compare to him. Purely nothing.

Anyway, when I was young, Caza was one of my favourite illustrator - I loved his book "Scènes de vies de banlieue."

Then came Moebius and Bilal...

Visually Fantastic Planet is mind blowing, I like the music too. I really like to do a short film inspired by it.

Hey Ron don't forget Druillet!

I can see some connection with Away style in his drawing. He got the dark and psychedelic side much like Voivod do.

Moebius and Druillet (kind of Jack Kirby and Marshall Rogers team) did a brillant Sci-Fi story called "Approche sur centauri" in the early to mid-70s in Metal Hurlant (later, Heavy Metal in the Americas).

Take a look in the upper left and right corners. Does it look familiar? "Hell awaits" maybe?

Was I schocked when I first saw this on the album!! No credit no nothing. Not even today.

Oh! And yes, Philippe Druillet had/is a big big influence on Away's art.

Beaucoup. And that's cool.

Wow, that is some great artwork. I guess I need to get to a comic book store the next time I get up to Montreal. Do you know of any good ones I could go to when up there?

awesome fuckin art in those comix, and yes, I saw the HELL AWAITS demons as soon as the image came up. Which also reminds me, I still need to buy Hell Awaits cd since I made some big $$$ selling my original cd on Ebay a few months ago.

I was thrilled to finally watch FANTASTIC PLANET again. It's a public domain film so anyone can run off copies. www.retroflicks.com has it for a good price on dvd along with lots of other cool old sci fi and b-movies.

If you haven't seen this movie, you're missing out on a cool animated story.

That movie blew my fucking mind when I saw it as a kid. I started drawing all sorts of crazy aliens and shit (I used to draw quite a lot in my youth). I must see this movie again. I found it at a shop here in town (for rent, not sale) and I will be getting it to watch this weekend.

That artwork in those comics is un-fucking-real. I totally love it. I think I will spend a good portion of my evening scoring the 'net for scans and info. Thanks you so much for this thread!

Let's not forget Gotlib's hilarious parody of Druillet's "Lone Sloane", in Rubrique-à-Brac tome 5.

One thing i discovered in Pilote when I was young around '74, was "Le Génie des alpages" (The genius of the Alps). A down to earth surrealist graphic novel that I must say, honestly, I didn't understand any shit. But the drawings were fantastic.

Here's a nice cover :

Everywhere there's mountains and rocks talking, running, sheeps doing physics, playing poker, crusing girls, etc. They want to be humans. And from one panel to the next, you got the sheperd not wearing the same shirt...
