I saw an article this moring on the Web (BBC I think) about those overrated albums. It's true, there's a LOT of them - same thing can be said for those underrated (there's more of them, anyway..) You could argue a lot on this subject - like politics and religion.
Here's a couple of mine. Not in order of preference...or not.

10 OVERRATED albums ----

Nevermind - NIRVANA
The wall - PINK FLOYD
Band on the run - PAUL McCARTNEY
Master of puppets - METALLICA
Screaming for vengeance - JUDAS PRIEST
Hounds of love - KATE BUSH
The number of the beast - IRON MAIDEN
A night at the opera - QUEEN
In the court of the Crimson King - KING CRIMSON
Beau Dommage - BEAU DOMMAGE

Kool Xtras = ALL of the LED ZEPPELIN albums!

10 UNDERRATED albums ----

Lincoln - LINCOLN
Cauchemar americain - AUT'CHOSE
Tales of imagination - ALAN PARSONS PROJECT
Wheels of steel - SAXON
Sold out - THE WHO
Iron Maiden - IRON MAIDEN
Hit and run - GIRLSCHOOL
Live and dangerous - THIN LIZZY
Whatever - AIMEE MANN
This fire - PAULA COLE

Kool Xtras =
Danger money - UK
Overwhelming Colorfast - OVERWHELMING COLORFAST

Evidemment, this list could go on and on. If you spread it to jazz, country, classical...

I don't have the tolerance or the patience to think of 20 albums so; most overrated albums of all time, EVERYTHING metallica have ever done, most underrated albums of all time, EVERYTHING Voivod have ever done. Jason left the worst band of all time to join the greatest band of all time. Just my opinion.

How could I "forgot" (Morgoth) the Voïvod LPs? They're so integrated to my record collection that I don't see them as underrated. They're just classics. What else? But, yes, they are underrated. Surtout, Dimension hätross...

I kind of agree about In the Court... I love KC, but for me the real meat is in the Wetton era, as well as the Discipline era.

21st Century Schizoid Man still rules, but the album, overall, isn't Crimson's strongest.

My most UNDER rated album is

1. Black Sabbath - Never Say Die 1976 - Ozzy's last record with sabbath. Still wish I could have seen that tour with Van Halen.

Bah. Never listened much to this one. You know what Sabbath album is waaaay overrated?

Paranoid.

Yep. The one everyone calls "their classic" or "their best album" sounds to me like a quicky they recorded between tours. Sure there's War Pigs and some of their classic songs, but come on, there's a lot of fillers on that one, mostly on the b-side. Even Iron Man is a bit overrated to me.

Bring me Masters of Reality, Vol. 4, SBS and Sabotage anytime.

The mere mention of any Ozzy-era Black Sabbath + Screaming For Vengeance as overrated albums removes any credibility from this thread.

But then, that's just my opinion, go on.

P.S.: I like Overwhelming Colorfast, but don't think they're underrated. Their huge Husker Du influence takes away almost all of the personality of their music.

Screaming for vengeance is not a bad album, it's GOOD album. I think the impact of British Steel is more important, notably in the UK where the NWOBM (that's it, no?) is based on great albums like this one from Priest and other bands.

Couldn't agree more with the KC criticism of "In the court" album
King Crimson is probably my all time favorite, with the Beatles, and I can't believe how underrated The ConstruKction of Light was. Not that I don't love the other eras, but the Discipline and Wetton era's usually get their due praise. But people seem to think that they haven't done anything relevant since the Discipline era. But I still think Construkction of Light is a masterpiece.

OK....shoot!

I'm a bit shocked by Halaine Peau's overrated list since most are classic albums; however I can see the point if you are referring to an "I'm sick of hearing about that album from that band!!!!" list. I enjoy pretty much everything on your overrated list yet never heard of BEAU DOMMAGE. shit, I couldn't imagine my collection without those recordings by Floyd, McCartney, KC, Queen, Maiden, Priest, Metallica, or Nirvana. I will say that those were the most overplayed records (because of certain songs) in those bands catalogs, but they are still great albums.

I never thought ANY Crimson album was overrated from any period in their brilliant carreer. I never hear ANY KC on the radio, not even 21stCSM. I'd probably list them as the longest running most underrated band (as far as commercial success) along with Voivod, Porcupine Tree (although they are finally getting some respect). Other underrated artists that come to mind are (that also had major distribution... since there are numerous self produced and indie lable bands that don't get the attention they deserve D&T, EOLB,...) :
Mordred
Satchel
Kevin Moore/Chroma Key
Souls at Zero (previously known as Wrathchild America)
Galactic Cowboys
UK

Agreed - the last 3 KC discs get constant rotation in my ears. Genius stuff.

Most overrated band ever = The Clash.

Beau Dommage is a pop/hippy/kind of prog band from Montréal, who released their first s/t album in 74. I actually like this album (xcept for le Phoque en Alaska, urgh, fuck le phoque!) and their second one (which has a 20 minutes epic on it!). But they are way overplayed here.

About Beau Dommage.

EDIT: Slaytanic, at last an avatar that truly represents you! Does that mean i should find an ugly ass avatar?

I didn't say that these albums aren't classics - they are. Who could argue the impact nevermind had on a generation? But for ME, example, if you wanna judge Thin Lizzy, you can't do it with the Jailbreak album. Idem for Paul McCartney (Ram, London Town has the whole spectrum of solo career), and I won't waste a byte on Beau Bummage .

As for King Crimson, I'm so bloody tired to hear people judge that magnificent band only by this album, I'm sick just to think of it...

"Tu connais King Crimson, man?" - Ahh ouen. L'album a'ec la face? Çâ, çé leur meilleur! Fuck, çé d'valeur qu'y-on pâs faitte un autre disqu' " (translation from a pure red beef quebecois conversation: "You know KC, man?" - Ahh yeah. The album with the big face? That's their best! Too bad they didn't make another one.

So, for me, this album, here in Quebec, is overrated. Probably half of the people knows the band by the picture sleeve... King Crimson is easily in the top ten of the most important bands ever - you can hear/see this rightnow.

We can easily start an argument with a thread like this!

Overrated? Anything ever recorded by Led Zeppelin. Absolute shite. Sloppy guitar playing, awful singing...blah. People go fucking ga-ga over this second rate blues rock band calling them innovators and such. Bullshit. They were sub-par musicians who got lucky coz people were sick of the hippy shit in the '60's.

Rant over. If you wish to flame me for this, fuck you. If you have a contrary position to this, then you are wrong and must change your misguided ways.

I saw them in '75 and they were one of the worst live bands I ever saw! Maybe I caught them on an off-night, but I had 3rd row in front of Page, so I could see and hear them pretty good. VERY disappointing! Same with the Stones in '78- dreadful! Ironically, the Stones are better NOW!

It's interesting how differnt part of the world have differnt "overrated" bands, but there are some worldwide. KC rarely gets talked about here in the states and no radio play whatsoever. Actually it's kinda good from where I am that KC get's that kind of attention in places, but it does suck that the only thing they know them by is the first album.

I'll second the vote for the Rolling Stones, and toss in Bruce Springsteen as being overrated.
