2004 was a great year in metal, despite Dimebag's murder, blah blah blah.

Here it goes, in loose (i.e., whatever comes to mind first) order:

1. MASTODON - Leviathan

2. NAPALM DEATH - Leaders Not Followers: Part Two

3. REVEREND HORTON HEAT - Revival

4. RAMMSTEIN - Reise, Reise

5. FEAR FACTORY - Archetype

6. BRIAN WILSON - Smile

7. KILLSWITCH ENGAGE - The End Of Heartache

8. MAYHEM - Chimera

9. ANTHRAX - Greater Of Two Evils

10. MINISTRY - Houses Of The Molé

11. IRON MAIDEN - The Early Years (DVD)

12. JUDAS PRIEST - Electric Eye (DVD)

13. MOTÖRHEAD - Inferno

Haven't listened to the new albums by Vader, Helmet and Darkthrone yet, so I can't cite them. I probably will when I have the chance, though.

"Forty-five moments of perfection translated through a cautionary escape into the perils of the mundane, the inherent entropy in ultimate order, and the potential threats of eternal, unchecked apathy in civilization; all cloaked in musical expression so thoughtful, creative and forward thinking that almost a quarter-century later, few can even comprehend it, much less match it." I don't think I bought five NEW albums this year... so ehh Megadeth's new one sucked... the new Quo Vadis was not bad... Rush's covers EP was excellent, though not up to Rush par... the Primus DVD kicked ass, and The Mars Volta's Deloused In The Comatorium was fucking excellent. I think that's it.

There are a lot of albums I wanted to buy in 2004 that I have yet to pick up. Among those are the new YOB, Isis, Enslaved, Electric Wizard, Rammstein, etc.

Some that I very much enjoyed, my 'best of'...
- Exodus: Tempo Of The Damned
- Clutch: Blast Tyrant (why more people aren't talking about Clutch is beyond me!)
- Esoteric: Subconscious Dissolution Into The Continuum
- The Melvins/Lustmord: Pigs Of The Roman Empire
- Meshuggah: I (great little EP!)
- Death Angel: The Art Of Dying
- Therion: Lemuria / Sirius B
- Probot: s/t (just too many cool people on one disc not for me to love, so fuck off )

I am in the process of listening to the new Megadeth now and I have to say I am kinda torn... There is some great playing here, some of the best from this band in ages, but Dave seems to be unable to shake the cheese factor despite putting together such a cool group of players. I got this from the library so I think I'll keep a rip of it in case I change my mind later.

Funny, 2004 seemed like a pretty good year for metal albums, some great releases this time around, yet I am beginning to find myself once again feeling alienated from the overall direction of the scene. Can't really put a finger on it... I wanna say stagnation or lack of new directions but that's not entirely true. Hmmm...

Coolest 'new to me' band discovery this year: Atomic Rooster!!! Vincent Crane and co. put out some pretty cool little records at the beginning of the '70's. A shame about his sad demise and suicide in '89.

Hoping 2005 brings us new a new Voivod album and some fucking DVDs!!!

EDIT: Oh shit, almost forgot the new Fear Factory! Maybe not a top 5 for me, but glad to see these guys return with a pretty good album. Hoping they continue to 'stretch out' a little on future releases as Christian seems a slightly more adventurous of a guitar player than Dino was.

shit, i knew there was a thread i kept forgetting to post on!

um, there was a lot of stuff i failed to buy this year...notable on this list are the new albums by:
Exodus
Death Angel
Anthrax
Drag The River
Helmet
Pig Destroyer
Masters of Reality

any of these could have made it on there, but back down to the reality of what i got and liked, plus a little commentary to stoke some interest:

1)Old Man Gloom - Christmas
- members of Isis, Converge, Cave-In(!), and Agoraphobic Nosebleed get together for their fourth full length and its their most fully realized album(their last album was one 27 minute track and was brilliant, but i dig having actual 'songs' on this one). if you like Isis or Neurosis or bands of their ilk, get this. its better, trust me.
2) Drive-By Truckers - The Dirty South
- if you like southern rock in any way, you will love this. they are the rulers of the new school of southern music. three guitarists/singers/songwriters make some interesting shit happen.
3)Mark Lanegan - Here Comes That Weird Chill/ Bubblegum EP
- some of the best stuff ever from the former Screaming Trees/QOTSA frontman. moody, intense, and hes one of the best rock singers in the world.
4)Deadboy & The Elephantmen - Song Mechanism
- this one was kind of a tease, only being 4 songs before they release the long player. but good stuff. singer Dax Riggs IS the best singer in rock. hes come along way from his thrash roots in Acid Bath...the newer stuff is half ambient/acoustic...half garage rock. but anything he sings on is amazing.
5)Escape Grace - One
- finally a record label for this great florida band who takes Helmet, Quicksand and Black Sabbath and throws them together with pure menace. they also have the nicest band website on the net: HERE:
6) Descendents - Cool To Be You/ 'Merican EP
- just kind of goes w/o saying, some of the greatest players in punk rock.
7)Probot
- awesome to see all the greats can still hack it. there were a few slow points, but better than most new, "good" bands, can do.
8) Fast Gato - Feral
- even though this came out a year ago, it still isnt officailly released by SST. so im calling it 2004, because thats when i got it. Scott Reynolds from ALL teams up w/ Greg Ginn from Black Flag for some demented, quirky hardcore. best stuff Ginn has done since the late 80s.
9)Clutch
- Blast Tyrant
- they just keep getting better and better. one of the tightest bands in the world w/ one of the most original singer/songwriters in "metal".
10) Eagles of Death Metal - Peace, Love, Death Metal
- easily one of the best straight ahead rock albums in years, i was totally surprised.

others who were close to making the list:
Fantomas
Napalm Death
Isis
Kevn Kinney's Sun Tangles Angel Revival
Jucifer
Only Crime
Prong [US Release]
Melvins/Lustmord
Mastodon
Kylesa
Modest Mouse
and the Voivod and Exciter reissues.

I didn't buy any records in 2004 because there are no record shops in the Welsh Mountains.

I did manage to get my hands on the first Motely Crue one, though. It takes time for fashions to get here. I think I might check Twisted Sister out next. Spandex and lipstick is very much in, down my local pub.
