Maybe he's using the freehand technique? "Hold the stick back slightly from where you usually grip it. You hit a rim shot, not a loud one, in fact very easily and with a straight up and down motion of the stick and arm. No arc or swing. keep the whole motion to 3 or 4 inches tops. Make sure the rim hits the stick where your fulcrum (grip) used to be because the rim is taking the place of your fulcrum. Let the stick stay on the rim and hold on to the back of the stick as it slightly dips below the rim (as the tip of the stick is forced up by the rim slightly). At this point your grip should be firm but flexible like a spring loaded affair. As you bring the stickup the tip will pop the head because of the fulcrum of the rim and the pressure from your grip. don't try to manipulate the stick. Firm grip with the fingers . Straight up and down motion with the arm. no wrist or finger control. shot-tap-shot-tap. the fingers should be very close to the rim/stick contact point. It'll sound like a machine gun once you get it going. " -------------------- "If thine enemy wrong thee, buy each of his children a drum."
