And the veteran Canadian band Voivod, featuring the former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted, played a strong set full of solid, midtempo songs. One fan showed Mr. Newsted his appreciation by sharing a cup of beer, although he probably would have enjoyed it more if it had been handed to him, instead of thrown. . .
Men greatly outnumbered women, and an atmosphere of sexual anxiety persisted all day. Many of the bands sang about hating ex-girlfriends or current girlfriends, and some of the exhibits offered fans a chance for a low-risk, not-quite-sexual encounter. . .
Like Mr. Osbourne, Korn's frontman, Jonathan Davis, understands that a heavy-metal hero need not forgo goofy eccentricity. As he stood onstage in his black skirt, holding bagpipes under his arm, Mr. Davis seemed like the only Ozzfest performer who might possibly follow in the founder's footsteps and graduate from heavy metal to reality TV: you can imagine him, a few decades from now, shuffling around his mansion in his slippers, reminding his loving family that he was once a self-proclaimed "freak on a leash."
