Pick one musician/composer/etc from your own country who you think created the best music your country has ever given the world.

RULE 1: Keep it simple and short - Just give the name, no more. If they're that good there should be no need to tell us why.

RULE 2: alive or dead, rock, classical, hip hop, wtf.

RULE 3: you can pick one thats been picked before. ie if someone has already picked Bruce Springstein and you also wanted to nominate him, then both of you fuck off because you're in the wrong forum.

RULE 4: no hurry, my son. think about it for a bit. Only one post per member.

RULE 5: just the name! I don't care why you think it.

I'd be interested to see what the Canadians here say, because most of my top ten musicians are Canadian. And I'm looking forward to seeing what Hex says, because he's from everywhere and knows his onions.

Right - starter for ten...

Syd Barrett

Interesting paradox EKH in applying this question to a country like Canada. Belgium would be somewhat similar, I suppose. I mean, most anglos don't know who Gilles Vigneault is. So if I pick an anglo artist and they're not from Quebec and they have little resonance with francophones are they representative of Canada? Like Gordon Lightfoot for example. Anyway, I guess I'll say Leonard Cohen (although I'm a little torn between him and Glenn Gould). Neil Young is a good choice too, Nell.

Good point Nia, Québec and Canada are two solitudes! And Leonard Cohen is a good choice.

Mine:
For Québec: Richard Desjardins
For Canada: Rush (why not?)

Oh and who's Gordon Lightfoot? Is he the kind of artist they get out of a closet for Canada Day, than put him back on July 2nd?

I wish that I am from Wales because for me there is only one truly great musical talent: Tom Jones! I'm serious, dammit!

But being from the Great White North, I have to say that the one musican who has influenced me the most is: Stompin Tom Connors!
