OLD Lady Drivers KICK ASS.OK folks, I could not last a whole month. I created this particular post for two message boards: You guys, and the Zappa Forum. (but you guys are way cooler) This is something I have brought up briefly on a couple of other threads, but this time I mean it! Question: Are there any bands that could be counted as worthy successors to King FZ's throne? Well, not really. But there are a few bands out there that carry on the legacy in their own way, whether it be intentional or not. The 5uu's are such a band. They are also a band who, when mentioned, usually spark a response along the lines of: "who the hell is that? " I discovered this ever-morphing conglomeration of ridiculously talented musicians back in the mid-80's when they released their first LP, the brilliant 'Bel Marduk and Tiamat'. Since then, I have mostly neglected to really dive into their material headfirst - until recently. Lately, I have been buying up their catalog one by one, and have come to realize that this is easily one of the greatest avant/ progressive bands EVER. I am now ready to do my part to propagate this outstanding band to the fullest, and I think the Voivod Fan board is a damn good place for this, with some grade A sick Zappa Freak/ Proggies found in here. This music will appeal to many of you, especially those who count any of the following among their favorites: Zappa's more 'experimental/ instrumental' works King Crimson (most eras) Gentle Giant Yes (specifically, the more intense 'Relayer'-type stuff) Art Bears The Residents many others This thread is also aimed at those who are seeking something thought-provoking and new, and something WAY off the mainstream path. My objectives are to provide a brief Bio, make a few choice (full song) MP3's directly available, and then provide the necessary info for purchase. Keep in mind, I stand to gain nothing but satisfaction from this. I sincerely hope that some of you end up as fans of this band, and I would love to hear your opinions, regardless. BIO:
(abridged, from the official site) 5uu's are a rock band originally instigated in 1980 by Dave Kerman, a drummer from Southern California. Although the "roots" of the initial grouping of musicians involved were that of fusion and rock 'n roll, within three years the music was approaching a style of guerilla-rock similar to the work of Rock In Opposition bands from Western Europe. At this point an alliance was forged with ReR Records in London and Wayside Music in Maryland, both of whom are instrumental to the promotion and distribution of interesting or unusual music on a world-wide scale. For over 2 decades now the group has been comprised of many reputable avant-rock players, many of whom have as well been successful with other bands or solo works whose style reflects a similar sense of spirit; Other past members have returned to their fusion interests, playing with the likes of Ndugu Chancellor, Patrick Moraz and John Scofield. To date there are 6 studio albums (70 songs) under the nomenclature of 5uu's, and many bootlegs of European tour concerts have been circulated worldwide. 5uu's share a stable with other competent players and composers from the Rock in Opposition- type infrastructure, ie Utotem, Thinking Plague, Present, Bob Drake, Blast, Susanne Lewis, Motor Totemist Guild etc. Discography:
(NEW 5uu's MATERIAL IS ON THE WAY - "Early 2003") ABANDONSHIP Cuneiform U.S.A.2002 REGARDING PURGATORIES Cuneiform U.S.A.2000 HUNGER'S TEETH ReR Megacorp U.K. 1994 CRISIS IN CLAY ReR Megacorp U.K. 1987 POINT OF VIEWS Cuneiform U.S.A. 1996 ('Point of Views' contains ALL of the following on one CD): ELEMENTS ReR Megacorp U.K. 1988 BAR CODE 7" Rotary Totem U.S.A. 1987 BEL MARDUK & TIAMAT U:r Records U.S.A. 1986 On to the Goodies:
These first two MP3's are from the above-mentioned Bel Marduk and Tiamat, the 5uu's amazing debut LP: (right-click the titles/ 'save as') 1. (The Birth of) Sporting - This instrumental was the first thing I ever heard from them. What an introduction! 2. (The Birth of) Magic, Dogma and Faith - Absolutely F*%ing Brilliant. And fear not; the vocals will grow on you. (files 1 & 2 removed - email me to get them)
This last sample is from a later incarnation of the band, from the 1994 LP, 'Hunger's Teeth'. This track displays how diverse and individual each 5uu's release really is: 3. Roan To Purchase: Wayside Music (just put "5uu's" in the search box) Remember, I am just scratching the surface here; and if you do happen to enjoy this stuff, there is endless material to discover from Founder/ Percussionist Dave Kerman.
My feature contains all the links you will need: Dave Kerman & the 5uu's

Funny you should ask! As the end of April draws near, I am narrowing it down a few choice cuts... So get the 5uu's and Klaatu stuff while you can... BTW, to whoever said they went out and bought Klaatu's first LP, I hope you were not disappointed... It is not the greatest album ever recorded, but 'Neutrino' is cool as hell, and 'Anus of Uranus' is kind of a clever little ditty. Anyway, new stuff will be up on the First.

Well, I figured there had to be at least one 'Sphincterhead' in here! If you like these guys, get your ass on Soulseek. I have damn near the entire MS catalog up on there. P.S. Since I am a big supporter of 'The Sphinctah' - I encourage you to support this very obscure band and buy the stuff that is still available, if you do like it. Contact me or drummer Greg Hynes for info: GKhyrem@aol.com

Well, the time has come for round 2.I have pondered long and hard over my vast collection of obscurities, rarities, rejects and debris, and have decided on these 3 tracks: ================== 1. Starting off with a bang, here are the pioneers of Splattercore: The Accused ...and their raging and utterly insane - M is for Martha (not for the weak-kneed) For more on The Accused: ================== 2. IMO, the most under-appreciated of all Guitar Icons is Frank Marino. Here is one of his earliest and finest moments: Strange Universe (from 1975) (file removed - email me if you want it) Marino, whose 3-piece band was known as Mahogany Rush, was at one point rumoured to have claimed that the spirit of Jimi Hendrix had entered him during an intense LSD experience. We will leave that to speculation, but let me just say that Marino is and was far superior to Hendrix in most aspects of Guitar Godliness. (settle down now! It's just an opinion) This one definitely qualifies as 'Doobie Material' for those so inclined. Kick back with the headphones and be transported. For more on the amazing (and ongoing) career of Frank Marino: ================== 3. Here is some killer Film Music. This is a piece from one of my favorite film score composers, Richard Band Band first gained moderate popularity in the mid 80's during his family-based partnership Empire Entertainment with father Albert and brother Charles. This era found Richard scoring memorable themes to some campy yet intense horror classics including: Re-Animator, Troll, From Beyond, The Alchemist ...and this one: Main Theme from 'Puppet Master'. The web lacks any real quality info on Band, but here is a decent write-up: Music from the Movies.com ...and his IMDB Entry. BTW, anyone who still wants the first entry of the thread, Klaatu - Little Neutrino, should grab it before Sunday Night. The same goes for The 5uu's - Birth of Sporting from thread page 2. They will both be removed at that time.
Well, that's all for now. Enjoy!

To anyone looking for Accused CD's: (OR Vinyl!)I know of a place where you can find pretty much all of them. They range in price, and can usually be found new or used. I ask one favor: Use my website to get there if you plan to buy them. It won't cost you a dime extra, but I will get a small commission for anything sold via my website. Here is a link, just type 'The Accused' into the GEMM search box: Tangento's Downloads (BTW - If you are going to buy later, bookmark my page, not theirs - my website is totally non-profit, and I need these commissions to keep it going) quote: Originally posted by Väinämöinen: That Marino song was quite cool IMO, Tangento. Very laid back and mellow! How do his newer songs sound? I guess I'll have to make a second-hand CD shop tour someday soon and try to get some of his albums. Thanks for introducing his stuff!
There is a heavy Hendrix influence present in his older stuff, but like I said - I like it way better than Hendrix. For that era, I would start with his first live album, which is an all fucking time classic: Another good album to buy is "Juggernaut" which was his mid 80's comeback release. Very strong. Most of his stuff is. Glad you guys enjoyed these.

Latest installment/ update:The Frank Marino track is out, and SAGA is in... This song may be familiar to some of you Canadians, and especially to anyone who remembers the earliest days of MTV. (when they actually played cool music once in a while) I heard this in the car the other day, and it caused me to crank the shit up loud and really take notice. This is an amazing song, with flawless instrumentation, great vocals & production, and one of the most insanely awesome guitar-keyboard solos of all time. ...and yes, it has a heavy dose of pure 80's cheesy-ness, but we can get past all that. Saga - On the Loose (track removed - email me if ya want it) Must be played LOUD, on some good equipment!

It does, Neutrino. I'm not from Germany myself, but my brother plays for a hardcore punk band and they played at Köpi last year (and also in 1999). Tangento, I liked this thread very much! I'm also into obscure music or whatever they call it. It's not a surprise that people are so open-minded for new music in this Forum (it takes a real music fan to fully understand Voïvod...). As for VdGG, I don't know much of their music, but I listened to 3 solo efforts by Peter Hammill which are pretty good ("Enter K", "Fireships" and some other which title I can't remember now). Zappa is "hors-concurs" for me! IMO, he was the best guitar player ever and a true artist. I'll be checking all the songs you post, Tangento. This thread is not a waste of time, believe me!!

Mr. Eddy, thanks for the kind words, (nice to see another Zappa FREEK on here!) and Nuc - Thanks for the link and info, etc.I will start off this round by reaching waaaay back to the year 1978, with yet another Canadian artist... OOPS!!!! uhhh there we go I mentioned this very track on another thread, where I indicated it as a pre-cursor to modern 'thrash' or 'speed metal'. I realize it is stylistically different, but the energy is where it's at. So call it whatever the fuck you want, after all these years, it is still a KICK-ASS instrumental... Ladies and gentlemen, (rock and roll's best-kept secret) THE PAT TRAVERS BAND!! with... HAMMERHEAD (file removed - email me if you want it) CRANK IT UP, Motherfuckers! I blew MANY a 'Radio Shack Super-Tweeter' back in the day, with this very song. Update: I just found out that CD Universe has the original album, Heat in the Street, along with another Travers classic, Puttin' it Straight on sale in one (autographed!) package:
I assure you, this is a very worthy purchase if you like what you hear. I just ordered one up myself. This guy still tears it up - here is his site: Pat Travers.com BTW, Travers has the unique distinction of having 'owned' Iron Maiden and Ozzy's best drummers (Nicko McBrain and Tommy Aldridge, respectively) ...before anyone knew who the fuck they were. (Aldridge is the one on this here track) Much more to come this month so check back once in a while.

The link worked fine, and thanks! Kind of a Skynyrd meets Sabbath vibe there. Very nice.
quote: Originally posted by Mr Eddy: Yes, you can call me a Zappa Freek... I ain't no "Zappa expert", but I own about 20 FZ albums, one home video ("Video from Hell") and I read his autobiography too ("The Real Frank Zappa Book"). (etc) Since you've posted a few classic Canadian tunes here, how about some Max Webster?? This band is completely unknown here in Brazil - they may have no more than 5 fans around here...
You RULE, man! Please, tell me about Max. I am unfamiliar.
quote: Originally posted by MeanMrMustard: Hey Tangento, (edited) ...I'll be glad to make and send you some tapes of Utotem. My guess is that you'll dig them if you're a 5uus fan. And I'll include some other stuff that might interest you. Ever hear of Happy Family, Anekdoten, Anglagaard, or Echolyn? If not, I'd be happy to send you samples. Thanks again man!
No, thank YOU! I am very familiar with U-Totem. Kerman is nothing less than a genius, and I am currently attempting to gather everything he's done. Is the U-T stuff you have out of print? If so, I would love to trade for it. As far as the rest of the bands or musicians you mentioned, I am lost. Please, tell me more! napalmzappa@astound.net BTW, another 20+ year-old (non-Canadian) classic coming up TONIGHT!
