I was over at a friend's house last weekend and as always I asked if I could check my email. Now this guy is well aware of my fixation on this band. I've burned a ton of cds over at his place for VV buddies and made him sit through long discourses on the unique concept of the VoiVod character, brilliance of Away, the AngelRat sellout...etc... He said, "sure, but, I know what you're really looking up. VoiVod. Don't bullshit me." Well, I was lying I'll admit cause I did truly want to come to my little home away from home: VoiVodfan.com.

Shawn had always been cool with VoiVod but something was different on this night. Amidst the changing of his baby's diapers, he proceeded to tell me how he thought I had seriously entered a fantasy world and that I might have a real problem with delusions. "You don't think that this fascination with VoiVod borders on mental disorder, do you? I think you've entered a place that you can't escape. Dude, you need professional help."

Now let me tell you. He was deadly serious. I didn't quite know how to respond. So I figured, well, if I'm gonna fly I might as well jump into the deep end. Hey, I said, I got a pic that I'd like you to scan.

All in all, I've invested a lot more time and energy into the Sims than this board, so I guess I'm in much worse shape than you are Mez.

Whew, I can imagine the Sims is quite addictive. When I was in school I spent waaay too much time building cities in Sim City 2000... and farting. A friend of mine insisted I farted an abnormal amount when in front of the computer back then... must have been a cafeteria food. Did I just say that out loud?

Mezcalhead. I wonder what your friend was baseing that on. You keep a Job & lead a normal life like the rest of us do, so what is his problem?
Let me ask you. Is this friend Religious in any way?
If so, then shrug it off because HE is the one who needs Mental Help.

It just pisses me off...that attitude.

I grew up around it in Religious Schools and Churches. Anything anyone finds fun and exciting...that is not condoned by the fucking Church...is frowned upon & told it is of the Devil.

"Be in the World, but not a part of it."
What a total mind-controlling lie.

What place is it of HIS to say YOU might be Mentally Ill?....but then again...
Maybe you are! HAHAHA!

Just kidding.

Voivod IS a fantasy world. So what! A fantasy world void of stale, boring and unintersting monkey crap that makes up too much of the entertainment industry these days.

I have a job, a decent education, and a ~~*normal*~~ life. Another thing i'm proud i have is an IMAGINATION. I'm glad i can have as much fun hanging with a few friends or rocking out to Voivod in my room, without going to the bar and acting like a cheeseball to pick up hoochies.

Nope, Kula, he's atheist. And he's also a huge sci-fi fan. His core problem is that he doesn't dig heavy metal. Some people just can't make that reach. You either like it or you don't. What I try to get through to him and others is that VV is so much more than just "metal", like Space Monger said(I liked that response dude.)

I would imagine it is a little strange for most folks to digest. I was just curious if more of the regulars here had experienced similar "eye-rolling" like me.

There's no doubt that the core problem
is his dislike for metal. Do ya'll listen
to the CDs you burn there or is it just
background music? It's kinda surprising
that he doesn't get off on the Voivod
imagery, given he's a sci-fi fan.
But you know how folks are down here,
Mezcal. Certainly we are in a very small
minority as Voivod fans in the deep
South (atheism would be at a minimum
also, however). I come here everyday.
Maybe this an extension of a hobby we
take very seriously, and that's our love
of this music, plus the quality folk here
make it the best. But hell, delusional?
That's kindve a stretch. I'm sure our
priorities are in order.

I've actually been lucky enough to turn some new people onto Voivod, which is not always an easy thing because they are so different. It's like trying to get someone into King Crimson when they are not into experimental and different sounding music.

My wife sure hates both bands!!!

I think people that are obsessed with top-forty and commercial music are the REAL ones who are delusional and mentally screwed. These people (99.9% of them anyway) are mindless and just follow the herd. Ask someone in five years who P.O.D. is or Limp Dick, and I *guarantee* they will respond "Oh yea, didn't they sing that one song? Whatever happened to them?" Well they made enough money to give-up on their crappy fans.

Let's face it: We are the only one's who actually took the time to get into Voivod's vibe, and therefor our reward is that we realize how awesome they really are.

I spend most of my spare time in the pub. Why? Because I have some great conversations down there ranging between the hilarious and the mind-altering. Pretty much the same reason why I check this place out every day.
If only there was a bar here... I bet Warcorpse would make sure there was Voivod on the dukebox!

heh heh... shit man. I probably sound like a right alcoholic! I probably am! But what the fuck, I'm not an aggressive drunk, in fact quite the opposite! Everything is fucking hilarious after a few pints!
I dunno if I'll be able to say that once the old liver packs in though....

Hey Mezcalhead. Given the account of the evening, I'd say your friend's comments were a bit misunderstood. It sounds like he may be a bit burdened by everyday responsibilities (i.e. changing diapers and all other aspects of caring for a baby). When you enter into heavy, life-altering stages of your existance, most other things become trivial. To a new parent, the new child is a focus you almost cannot see past, and usually don't want to. You become enveloped in a feeling of what life and our existance is really about.

Seeing you so into something that in his mind is so abstract, probably puzzles him a bit now. I don't think either of you are wrong for feeling the way you do. You're just on two different paths and at different places in life.

As for the subsequent religious notions posted; I'm a "Jesus freak" and a "Voivod freak". Last time I checked, there's nothing wrong with me, and I doubt anyone here
would disagree.

A lot of my 'metal' friends thought I was insane listening to and talking about this 'weird' band all the time. Whatever, I'd rather listen to my favourite band than the comments of non-understanding people. After all they accepted my 'mental disorder' and finally I got most of them into VoiVod too.

Have you ever heard the bands
Zao or Stavesaker?
Stavesaker kicks ass!
The song 'Zzyzx Scarecrow' is cool.

I didn't. Shame on me! What do they sound like?

BTW: You got any album by Nektar? 'Tab in the Ocean' and 'Remember The Future' are killer!

Nektar is really great Music!
I do have those two on Mp3 format, but dont have any Albums.
I need to buy some of that stuff if i can find it. Thanks for reminding me.

Stavesaker and Zao are really heavy "Christian Metal" Bands.
Or at least they lean towards that Message...but that doesnt matter to me, because they ROCK!
I just figured that i would recommend for you (if you like) and NOTHINGFACE.

My Tolken of Peace for my Opinion that may have upset both of you.

I will be more tollerant in future postings.

Life is too fucked up anyways and after all...we suffer from the same Tecnocratic Manipulation....

VOIVOD!!!

Hello Mezcalhead and the other inmates of the Voivod Morgoth Science Hospital..."We Are Not Alone" in being Voivod fans and folks who are hopelessly immersed in the mainstream don't have a clue...for me,Voivod is a very enjoyable and fascinating band..they're from a remote area and explore science data/fiction with futurist robotic-rhythms...I'm a collector of their stuff but I don't neglect my social interactions/relationships/work...in this hyperconformist and vapid age, it's good to be passionate and inspired by something that touches your imagination...some bands leave you with nothing but Voivod gives you something to think about on every album...I've lost count of how many times I was inspired to get into bass just by hearing Blacky's blower-motor style.....I've been able to get a couple of folks into Voivod-if more people allowed themselves to be a bit open to new things.......
